Brief Description
This is an opportunity to shape the future direction of the Region for social value and sustainability governance. We are seeking for two roles looking at specific areas of the business.
Firstly we need to create a social value strategy for the Region and then oversee its implementation in what is a new and exciting area of sustainability for the business. We will build on the excellent work delivered in our Capital programs and roll the social value agenda out across operations, maintenance and our wider procurement activities. Working with a diverse range of stakeholders across the business you will set out our strategy for the next 5 years, identify best practice from across different industries, build the business case for this area and support the Route teams to implement your plans.
The second role is to support our governance and roll out of new initiatives across the Region. Focusing initially on biodiversity and then the full range of sustainability topics, we want someone who can drive change through an organisation. This is about developing the networks and cultivating the relationships required to get things done in a matrix style organisation. We will also need implement new governance structures and hold ourselves to account against relevant KPI's. You will play a key role in developing those measures and helping to drive the sustainability culture in Eastern.
About the role (External)
Key Accountabilities –
1.Deliver expert technical advice on environmental management and sustainability requirements to stakeholders across the Routes/Region/Programmes, embedding requirements and performance measures into business wide processes and controls.
2.Implement the environment and sustainability aspects of the Region's sustainability strategy and plans, working with all relevant business areas and the supply chain to enable successful delivery.
3.Work with Route teams to determine practical and deliverable measures to improve the environmental and sustainability performance on projects. Drive the implementation of best practices through the project teams and the supply chain by capturing and sharing lessons learnt to deliver efficiencies.
4.Manage and deliver an appropriate governance framework that delivers risk based Level 2 assurance for the Region/Programme on environmental and sustainability performance and drives continuous improvement.
5.Manage the Environment team within a Region/Programme (where relevant).
6.Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, liaising with regulatory bodies and other agencies, developing partnerships with NGOs, working collaboratively with contracting organisations, maintaining effective liaison with other IP Regions/Programmes and aligned routes, and contributing to the national strategy.
7.Manage the implementation and continuous improvement of the Environment Management System (EMS) within the Region/Programme through active engagement within the relevant business areas and the supply chain.
8.Manage the delivery and implementation of environment and sustainability competence framework and associated education and training programme for the Routes/Region/ Programme, supporting staff to understand their responsibilities, and improve technical awareness of environmental aspects.
9.Develop internal and external environment and sustainability communications for the Region/Programme such as cascades, briefings, lessons learnt, case studies, newsletters etc.
10.Build the desired environment and sustainability culture throughout the business unit to achieve continuous improvement and adoption of best practice.
Essential
·Practitioner member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM / CIWEM (or equivalent through experience).
·Degree level qualification (minimum UK level 6) in environment / sustainability or other relevant subject (or equivalent through experience).
·Demonstrable significant experience managing specific topics areas such as biodiversity, social value, governance or permitting or delivering sustainability agenda in wider business units across multidisciplinary areas, with involvement in construction programmes across multi discipline areas.
·In depth understanding of environment / sustainability legislation and/or national policy.
·Experience in implementing successful environmental / sustainability improvements.
·Experience of working with management systems (e.g. ISO or equivalent)
·Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a specific emphasis on influencing the views of peers, colleagues and stakeholders.
Desirable
·Masters level qualification in relevant subject
·Full member of IEMA or equivalent professional institute e.g. CIEEM / CIWEM.
·Experience of managing relationships with Regulators.
·Rail industry experience
·Auditing competency
