Who we are and what we do
Headline has spent over three decades creating bestsellers and our passion for the commercial means we are home to some of the UK’s biggest-selling authors and continue to invest in new talent with stellar sales potential.
Headline publishes some of the biggest names in fiction, including Martina Cole, Neil Gaiman, Maggie O’Farrell, Karen Rose, Jill Mansell, Victoria Hislop, Simon Scarrow, Dorothy Koomson and Deborah Harkness, and is proud to publish the books that immerse, entertain, and grip their readers. Over the last couple of years we have launched an array of exciting new voices that include Bobby Palmer, Bolu Babalola, Erin Sterling, Alex Hay and Freya Berry.
We’re on an exciting growth trajectory right now as a business – our authors are appearing on the most prestigious prize longlists and shortlists and our sales have been growing at speed. As one of the most dynamic publishers going, we are shortlisted for Publisher of the Year at the 2023 British Book Awards.
What you'll be doing
The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic development of our romance imprint Eternal, and turbo-charging our digitally-led commercial fiction imprint, Accent. You will acquire your own list of titles, with a focus on creating digital bestsellers in both the UK and US. Alongside this you will be working with the Deputy Publishing Director to oversee the acquisition strategy for both imprints, plus managing and thinking of ways to grow sales of our existing authors. You will explore different pathways to find talent, whether that's through your own idea creation, open submissions or seeking out self-published authors.
You will also be line managing at least one member of the team in this role.
Who we are looking for
Do you have an eye for a potential commercial fiction runner? Are you obsessed with the Kindle charts? Do you love creating digital bestsellers?
At Headline we love digital publishing; we over-index in this format and it's a strategic priority to keep growing in this space. We have an exciting opportunity for a lover of commercial genre fiction to help take our digital publishing to new heights.
The successful candidate will be passionate about romance in particular, but have an interest in all genres of commercial fiction, with a proven track record in digital publishing and a demonstrable ability to spot and pre-empt trends in the digital market. You will be an enthusiastic champion of your books from conception through to publication and beyond – collaborating closely with marketing, publicity, sales and rights. You will have strong relationships within the industry and also be proactive in seeking out new projects. You may have managed people before or would be excited to work closely with the rest of the team, nurturing talent in the more junior roles. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate where an idea of theirs has directly led to a successful publication, whether that's the book idea itself, a cover change or marketing idea that helped its sales trajectory.
