Applicants are invited for the post of Locum Respiratory Consultant (Maternity Cover) based at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), Bromley, which is part of the King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is a 12 months 1.0 WTE fixed term post based at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), Bromley.
The appointed Respiratory Physician will join a well-established department providing secondary care to our local populations whilst working in partnership across both PRUH and Denmark Hill sites along with tertiary services across SE London.
The Department of Respiratory Medicine has a strong history of service provision, integration with community and primary care, teaching and research. It has a variety of academic interests, teaches clinical medicine and offers both respiratory and general medicine to the population of Bromley for the PRUH site. The department provides full lung function testing, sleep investigations, bronchoscopy, EBUS, pleural and a ventilatory support service.
Main duties of the job
The Respiratory Department based at the PRUH is expanding. We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative consultant to develop the provision for our specialist services at the PRUH to ensure patients receive early specialist input, develop patient centred models of care and enable the department to move to a 7 day service. Applicants will be able to discuss with the Clinical Lead their sub-specialty preferences and these can be incorporated into the role. In particular, we are interested in candidates with expertise in Sleep and Non Invasive Ventilation. There are opportunities to get involved in other areas including Pleural, EBUS, Infection and Post-Covid Assessment services.
The post holder will also be expected to be taking part in the general medicine on call rota and look after inpatient bed base, which consists of two wards, which deliver NIV, tracheostomy care and HFNC in a 12-bed unit and 20-bed unit, which has two negative pressure rooms.
Job responsibilities
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Together with other colleagues, to provide a high quality care service to patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
2. Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract.
3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
5. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Groups management team where part of the service structure.
6. Contribute to the Care Groups research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan.
9. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.
10. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies.
11. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
12. Kings is committed to providing Consultant led 7-day services and in the event of future developments the post holder would be expected to contribute equally with other Consultant colleagues.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full MRCP
* Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
Registration
* Full Registration with GMC
* Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
* On the day of interview applicants must be within 6 months of CCT or must have fully completed CESR application and be fully registered on the GMC Respiratory Specialist Register.
Training and Experience
* Wide experience in all aspects of respiratory and general medicine, culminating in award of Certificate of Completion of Training by GMC, or award of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialty Registration (CESR) by GMC.
Administration
* Experience in day-to-day organisation of respiratory services in a busy Teaching Hospital
* Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
* Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
Management and Leadership
* Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
* Management course and/or qualification
Audit and Quality Improvement
* Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
* Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.
* Audit Publications
Research and Publications
* Experience of clinical research.
* Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.
* Relevant research experience
Teaching
* Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
