With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Strategic Project team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission network that is required to support ambitions Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.
SPEN are currently recruiting a Principal Engineer to join the SP Transmission Strategic team to oversee the Engineering Design function for transmission civil works in Strategic Projects. The postholder will manage the design and engineering outputs, including approvals for all SPT Strategic Projects.
This role involves managing engineering interfaces with EPC contractors and OEMs, and ensuring innovative designs for transmissions infrastructure that meets requirements.
What you’ll be doing
1. Lead the Engineering Design Delivery for the civil and structural engineering elements with accountability for establishing Strategic Projects EPC design strategy and processes to ensure a consistent approach to consenting design and detail design.
2. Engineering deliverables are successfully achieved or accelerated, including indirect project matrix management for several lead engineers.
3. Key technical interface with Strategic Agreement Framework EPC contractors; accountable for Civil and Structural design deliverables, assurances, and standardized approach across Strategic Projects Portfolio.
4. Provide technical support to the Project Development and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning the design and delivery of civil and structural engineering design works e.g. access roads, concrete foundations, piling, retaining structures, steelwork and buildings.
5. Advise on the development of pre-contract design of projects by supporting the technical assessment of concept designs in terms of substation siting, access, earth works and other relevant factors.
6. Assess engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with client requirements and recommend and review construction techniques, sequence of works and input to construction programme of works where required in relation to civil/structural works.
7. Identify, review and/or support industry leading or innovative solutions to reduce whole life carbon and promote sustainability.
8. Ensure delivery is de-risked with input to early stages of design with EPC contractors regarding constructability.
9. Ensure that SPT standards, policies and operational requirements are aligned with Strategic Project delivery.
10. Lead on Strategic Projects technical Initiatives e.g., new tools, systems, and approaches to exploit new engineering opportunities, such as BIM and sustainable solutions, and new solutions from contractors and across the construction or other industries.
11. Participate and direct cross-discipline transfer of expertise with fellow Principal Engineers and Section Heads, acting as a key link for interactivity with other engineering experts/departments, including other Transmission Operators.
12. Leading engineering reviews governance, assurance and approval for EPC design calculations, models, reports and regulatory submissions with thorough attention to detail and delegated authorisation responsibility.
13. Represent SPT Strategic engineering position, and interests, at senior industry, regulatory and public consultations.
14. Responsible for setting department-wide professional engineering working standards, practices and pace of delivery, acting as an engineering role-model, setting aspirational targets and encouraging academic rigour.
15. Provide leadership & talent development by coaching project, senior and lead engineers through a culture of continuous professional development. Ensuring best practices and lessons learned across all SPT.
16. Capable of delivering new and advanced engineering solutions to enable accelerated delivery of Strategic Projects HND ASTI projects.
What you’ll bring
1. Proven experience and knowledge in the area of civil and structural engineering design works for electrical network transmission projects or similar.
2. Ability to implement, apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice in a design environment.
3. Ability to manage under pressure and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment with a diverse and demanding workload.
4. Experience in working in a dynamic environment and ensuring delivery of engineering outputs.
5. Direct or Indirect line management and leadership experience and working in a dynamic environment with interfaces with internal and external stakeholders.
6. Ability to operate in an environment of uncertainty and incomplete information and make well-reasoned decisions. Lead by example and drive transformational change.
7. Excellent presentation skills, including the ability to apply persuasive influence to drive decisions through engineering analysis.
To be successful in a role you will need to demonstrate as a minimum:
1. Engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) and/or postgraduate qualification (MBA, MEng, MSc) or relevant experience. Chartered Engineer preferred.
2. Experience in engineering EPC environment of multiple large strategic projects.
3. Proven experience/expert knowledge in civil and structural design for the construction of electrical transmission networks at voltages up to 400kV.
4. Knowledge of Transmission Operator Networks health and safety and technical requirements and compliance.
5. Proven experience working with CDM regulations.
6. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
