TRUST DOCTOR IN SPECIALIST HIP AND KNEE UNIT (Hip & Knee Arthroplasty)
Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust
We are excited to be offering an ST3 LAS post for an enthusiastic and dynamic trainee within the Joint Reconstruction Unit (JRU). The role will be as a registrar level doctor and the successful candidate will be allocated to two consultants for a six month rotation.
We have designed this post to be well suited to trainees who have completed their Core Surgical training and are looking to secure working hours, what it takes and why a national training number in orthopaedics the following year. The successful candidate will have a formal clinical and educational supervisor and be expected to continue to use ISCP to develop their portfolio.
The successful candidate will be supported to attend regional registrar teaching to continue their educational development.
Prior to commencing the role, the candidate will be encouraged to meet with their supervisor to discuss their development needs.
Main duties of the job
Successful applicants will be expected to become integrated members of the team involved in the day-to-day care of patients on the wards, outpatient clinics, and theatres. There is an on-call commitment.
Ward care will involve the management of post-operative patients. Although our trust does not have an emergency department, the JRU receives urgent referrals from local referring units for urgent cases, most commonly revision arthroplasty.
Clinics involve the review of both new and follow-up patients within a secondary and tertiary setting. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a broad range of pathology and enhance clinical skills.
There are weekly MDTs and the candidate will be expected to present upcoming surgical cases and ensure appropriate investigations have been completed. We are the regional major revision centre for knee arthroplasty and therefore we run a weekly regional MDT. There will be between 3 and 4 theatre sessions per week involving all aspects of hip and knee arthroplasty. The work is specialist, but the successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to improve their surgical skills over the course of the year.
