Job overview
The average daily emergency “take” in Adult Medicine is 35 patients (+25 for Care of the Elderly) and the average length of stay is < 4-5 days. Consultant post-take ward rounds are carried out continuously in the EQ (Emergency Quadrant). There are over 6,000 emergency admissions each year to Adult Medicine, with a further 4,000 annual admissions to Care of the Elderly.
The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine has twice-weekly sessions of postgraduate and audit activity, including a weekly Physicians’ Grand Round. There is also a weekly lunchtime Clinical Conference. The Division has a regular teaching commitment with resident students from Cardiff, Manchester, and Liverpool.
Main duties of the job
The candidate will be responsible, both professionally and managerially, to Dr H Nair, clinical lead for acute medicine. You will also be supervised by a team of consultants within acute medicine.
He/she will:
1. Provide support to Consultant and Associate Specialist in managing the department in-patients and out-patients (ambulatory patients).
2. Provide leadership and education to the junior doctors on the team.
3. Provide On Call as a Middle Grade.
4. Contribute to local postgraduate activity.
5. Participate in Clinical Audit and CPD, which is fully supported by the Health Board.
6. Participate in research projects as necessary.
Shared Office accommodation and access to intranet/internet will be provided.

Person specification
Health
* Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice)
* Ability to provide complete details of employment history.
* At least 24 months experience in medicine or an ACCS programme or equivalent (not including Foundation modules).
Application Completion
* ALL sections of application form completed FULLY according to written guidelines.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* MRCP (UK) Part 1 or equivalent at time of application or work toward obtaining Part 1 within 6 months of being appointed.
* MRCP (UK) full diploma or equivalent.
* Intercalated BSc or equivalent.
* Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree).
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current license to practice.
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent.
* Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competences in medicine at time of application and CT/ST2 competences in medicine.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Not previously relinquished, released or removed from a training programme in the specialty except under exceptional circumstances.
Fitness to Practice
* Is up to date and fit to practice safely.
Language Skills
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
Research and Audit Skills
* Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
* Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Evidence of relevant academic & research achievements and involvements in a formal research project.
