The University of Greenwich is looking for an enthusiastic and hard-working Maintenance and Development Technician Apprentice to work with the Senior Technician to help construct and modify solids handling test rigs within the Wolfson Centre, as well as general maintenance and technical support associated with a busy environment.
Automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19+ year olds.
Training course: Maintenance and operations engineering technician (level 3)
Hours: Monday to Friday, shifts to be confirmed.
30 hours a week

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
During the first year of the apprenticeship, you will be studying at college and will be paid for this. After the first year, you will transition to working full-time and attend college one day a week.
* Construction and assembly of laboratory rigs and instrumentation within the Wolfson Centre for consultancy, research, and teaching activities
* Support users of the test rigs and instrumentation with repair, troubleshooting, and advice on modification
* Maintain, carry out fault diagnosis and repair a wide range of equipment within the laboratory areas, ensuring compliance with safety guidance
* Ensure the security and housekeeping of the laboratory areas are maintained to standards to ensure compliance with statutory and local safety expectations
* Manufacture artefacts and test specimens for teaching, research, and consultancy using machine tools, hand tools, welding, and cutting equipment
* Inform the Centre’s Support Manager of requirements for consumable materials and components for the construction of test rigs and apparatus
* Develop a basic knowledge of software used within the school
* Use email and identify consumable and replacement parts as appropriate
* Operate access equipment and materials handling plant including forklift trucks, overhead crane, scissor lift, and light commercial vehicles for the collection and distribution of materials
* Facilitate statutory inspections for pressure equipment and lifting gear and engage with risk assessments and inspections
* Carry out other duties as requested by the centre's management
* Liaise with external organisations as appropriate, especially suppliers of equipment and materials and sub-contract manufacturers
* Contribute to cross-functional team working with other FES Department staff
* Continuously improve own knowledge and maintain own continuous professional development (CPD)
* Maintain good timekeeping and manage own time to ensure work project schedules are met
* Maintain a proactive approach to ensuring technical support needs of the centre, both current and future, are met
