Job Title: Woodland Officer
Salary: £17,400 pro-rata for 22.5 hours per week (£29,000 per annum)
Days of work: To be agreed and include Sundays throughout tree planting season from November to Easter and throughout the year to support Citizen Science programme June to August (at least two per month)
Responsible to: Chief Executive
Purpose of Job: To co-ordinate our annual woodland creation activities and engagement with landowners on Dartmoor and surrounding areas.
Location: Hybrid working - at least one day per week at Moor Trees site (office or nursery)
Transport: Own vehicle required but also access to Moor Trees Mitsubishi L200.
Working conditions: This role requires working outdoors, sometimes in challenging weather conditions as well as regular weekend working over our busy times operationally. The role may involve physically demanding tasks, including walking long distances or carrying equipment.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Woodland Officer will be responsible for delivering our habitat rich woodland creation programme working with landowners to plan, plant and care for their new woodlands. The role will involve a combination of providing advice on environmental conservation and habitat creation, knowledge of good woodland management practice, outreach activities, landowner engagement and monitoring our portfolio of woodland sites.
Operational
* Working with our freelance Woodland Creation Advisor to deliver our annual programme of Woodland Creation by working with landowners to plan and implement tree planting activities and apply for funding and grants.
* Collaborating with seasonal workers to manage Moor Trees’ annual winter tree planting season including liaising with landowners and partners to plan activity including risk assessments, health and safety and logistics and prepare site maps and plans.
* Co-ordinating the preparation of tree stock and protection products for each planting with the Operations Manager.
* Recruiting and supervising our volunteers to support tree planting days including sessions with local businesses and community groups as part of our Wild Work Days.
Compliance and environmental practices
* Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and policies related to woodland creation and land management and their application within a Protected Landscape.
* Conduct, or commission, wildlife surveys and habitat assessments to promote biodiversity and lead our annual Citizen Science programme and involvement in research projects.
Community and stakeholder engagement
* Engage with local communities, landowners, and other stakeholders to promote woodland creation on Dartmoor and surrounding areas and our role in delivering this.
* Represent the charity at local events and shows and on occasion organise workshops promoting our work.
Monitoring and reporting
* Collect data and produce internal and external reports on our woodland creation activities and impact.
* Manage our QGIS mapping with data on Moor Trees woodland creation activities and priority areas for landowner engagement to monitor progress on Dartmoor.
Administration
* Undertake general administrative duties for the position, using IT (MS Office packages, web-based systems, mapping software, e-purchasing), and establish and maintain files and systems of work and data recording in accordance with UK GDPR regulations.
* Maintain excellent record keeping, digitally and in written form including photography and video alongside landowner testimonials.
Other
* Be aware of and adhere to Moor Trees policies and procedures, including health and safety and consistently apply the principles of Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding, as embodied in Moor Trees policies & practices throughout the duties outlined above.
* Undertake any other tasks commensurate with the level of the role.
