The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for a senior in-house lawyer to step up into a Head of Legal role within a renewable energy business, where they can not only put their own stamp on legal and commercial matters but also lead the introduction and maintenance of corporate governance structures, in the role of company secretary, in a business that is looking to scale its operations.
[There is also an opportunity for an interim lawyer to make an immediate start with an option to be considered for a permanent role, should they so wish.]
The Mission
In early 2024 Bring Energy launched as the UK’s largest operator of some of the UK’s largest city-scale heating and cooling networks. By growing and enhancing existing projects, the company is expanding into cities across the country, helping to meet the UK’s targets for decarbonisation and energy security.
Backed by a diverse consortium of international and UK investors, Bring Energy already manages an impressive portfolio of assets for residential, commercial, public sector and retail sector customers. These include 432MW of heating capacity, 117MW of cooling capacity, and 67MW of electricity generation capability.
The company is the operator of some of the UK's most significant heat networks, from iconic landmarks such as London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, ExCel Centre and Battersea Power Station to sprawling urban centres including Edinburgh, Newcastle, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester and Southampton.
By transitioning away from gas-fired combined heat and power plants towards innovative solutions like waste heat recovery, biofuels, and large-scale heat pumps, Bring Energy is working with local authorities, developers, and communities to accelerate the growth of city-scale networks paving the way toward a greener future and navigating a path to net-zero operations by 2035.
Your Role as Head of Legal
Reporting to the company’s Chief Commercial Officer, you will be seeking high-level responsibility for managing all legal relationships with customers, business partners, and other third parties and ensuring compliance with regulations governing all business operations.
This will include commercial contracts, corporate work, project finance, real estate matters and any disputes arising from time to time. As company secretary you will also be the steward of corporate governance structures, regulatory requirements, board meetings, the corporate risk register and insurance matters.
The Candidate
Applications are welcome from qualified legal professionals with at least 5 years PQE of the application of English law to general corporate and commercial contracts matters and possibly also handling project finance transactions, advising on potential disputes and/or real estate matters. This work experience may have been derived from private practice, working as in-house legal counsel, or both.
Experience derived from the energy sector is clearly advantageous, whether from within a law firm or in an energy supply or power generation business. Experience in project finance is also helpful but not essential.
The appointee will offer a blend of technical legal and compliance expertise, alongside their ability to be commercial, manage risk, speak in plain English, influence at the highest level, prioritise and make a key contribution to the company’s achievement of strategic business goals.
Bring Energy offers an opportunity to blend an element of home working (2 days per week) with a 3 day presence in offices close to Victoria Station.
For a confidential discussion about this role please get in touch with Bring Energy's exclusively retained consultant, Miguel Florit, at Florit Legal.
