We are seeking an experienced Senior Import Manager to join our dynamic Ocean Freight Forwarding team in Rainham (RM13 8EU).
In this hands-on role, you will provide clear operational direction to the Ocean Import Operations team across the Rainham and East Midlands branches to deliver consistent “right-first-time” services and financial accounting. You will develop existing client relationships and support developing and delivering new business opportunities that enhance gross margin and achieve profit targets. Additionally, you will promote a positive and proactive team culture that works frictionlessly across Yusen’s UK and global network. Therefore, the ideal candidate must be a commercially focused individual with demonstrable experience within the ocean freight forwarding sector.

Main Responsibilities
1. Operations
- Responsible for the Ocean Import P&L through to Gross Margin, with a revenue turnover of GBP 9M p/a
- Plan business activity and workload across the operational team through effective team and individual engagement.
- Ensure the OFF-Quality Management Systems are maintained, including Regular system training, valid Standard Operating Procedures and Service Level Agreements in place, and compliance with Non-conformity and financial reporting requirements in every respect.
- Review and develop existing process standards and KPIs to improve operational efficiency.
- Adopt and implement systemic solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
- Ensure all team are completed within agreed timescales and deadlines, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and practice.
- Act as an escalation point for the customer and network, ensuring any issues are raised with the Head of OFF where necessary.
2. Team Leadership
- Support the recruitment process for all operational resource
- Engage and motivate the Freight Forwarding team through coaching, performance management and appraisal techniques.
- Provide weekly briefings to the operations team to ensure awareness of operational performance and future planning
- Coordinate holiday planning, ensuring absence is managed within company guidelines.
- Provide operational cover for managers and team leaders in their absence.
- Conduct Company disciplinary and grievance procedure as appropriate, demonstrating a fair and consistent approach.
- Promote a positive and supportive working environment equally for all members of the team.
3. Commercial
- Ensure customers have an excellent experience of Yusen at all times.
- Analyse the market and understand trends and developments within the OFF sector.
- Responsible for ensuring all customers receive regular KPI packs and that customer meetings and development reviews are held monthly and/or quarterly.
- Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, retention and profit opportunity through a structured account management and development approach.
- Support the development and enhancement of ocean freight products, such as LCL etc
- Monitor performance & cost of all suppliers.
- Work with the commercial and BD teams to support new business opportunities
- Ensure successful implementation of all new network and BDM business. Attend client visits as required.
Key skills and requirements
1. Demonstrable management experience within the ocean freight forwarding sector
2. Excellent team management and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and support teams to achieve goals
3. In-depth knowledge of the Cargowise One and Cargowise Next system essential
4. High level of Commercial awareness
5. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, focusing on addressing operational challenges efficiently
6. Strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and managing multiple priorities.
7. Possess strong analytical abilities, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to think strategically and analytically
8. The ability to influence stakeholders both internally & externally and at different levels of seniority
9. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build relationships with various stakeholders.
10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
11. Strong numeracy/literacy
12. Ability to manage multiple projects
