GSL Education’s Lincoln branch is seeking a committed and compassionate Mental Health Support Worker to provide essential care and guidance to students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Job Summary:
As a Mental Health Support Worker, you will be an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for students with SEMH needs. You will work closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to provide tailored interventions and emotional support, helping students manage their mental health and achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities of a Mental Health Support Worker:
* Provide one-to-one and small group emotional and behavioural support to students with SEMH needs.
* Develop and implement personalised support plans, focusing on mental health interventions and emotional well-being.
* Work collaboratively with external professionals such as counsellors, educational psychologists, and social workers to ensure a holistic approach to student care.
* Monitor student progress, offering guidance and support to help them develop coping strategies and resilience.
* Assist in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), contributing insights from a mental health perspective.
* Support students in managing crises and challenging situations, using de-escalation techniques and therapeutic approaches.
* Facilitate workshops or group sessions on mental health awareness, emotional regulation, and coping strategies for students.
* Provide a consistent and safe presence during school hours, break times, and off-site activities, supporting students in both structured and unstructured environments.
* Maintain accurate records of interventions, progress, and any safeguarding concerns, ensuring regular communication with senior leadership and safeguarding teams.
* Actively participate in staff training, meetings, and professional development to stay up to date with best practices in mental health support.
Requirements for Mental Health Support Worker:
* Previous experience working in a mental health or social care setting, ideally with children or young people.
* Strong understanding of SEMH challenges and relevant support strategies.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and external professionals.
* Ability to remain calm, patient, and empathetic when dealing with students in distress or exhibiting challenging behaviour.
* A relevant qualification in mental health, psychology, social care, or a related field is desirable (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, Mental Health First Aid).
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and the ability to recognise and act on safeguarding concerns.
* A proactive and flexible approach to working in various school environments.
* An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service or willingness to apply for one.
