Gallery Invigilator
The Gibberd Gallery is a charity-run arts hub that relies on volunteers to show exceptional and inspiring exhibitions throughout the year in a purpose-built gallery environment.
We host a number of temporary exhibitions every year and are home to the permanent collection of 20th-century watercolours donated to the town by Sir Frederick Gibberd.
We look for volunteers who are eager to work independently, engage with the public, and get involved in projects that interest them within our programme. The timetable for volunteering is organized in morning and afternoon shifts (9:30 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm). We appreciate all the work put in, and visitors to the gallery benefit greatly from having someone here to talk to.
If you have an interest in the arts or are a student looking for work experience in this field, this is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into a working gallery.
Responsibilities
1. Speaking to visitors and keeping a record of visitor numbers.
2. Taking messages from visitors and offering further information.
3. Sorting post and press clippings.
4. Answering the phone for general inquiries and taking messages.
5. Keeping displays clean and well-ordered, including posters and leaflets.
6. Stuffing envelopes when needed.
7. Turning on exhibits and lights in the morning and switching them off in the afternoon.
8. Helping with gallery activities such as workshops, talks, and meetings.
9. Selling books and postcards to visitors.
Other tasks may arise and will be communicated in the message book or assigned to specific volunteers who are keen to take on more responsibilities or have particular interests. We want to work with volunteers to improve our offerings, which could include leaflet distribution or other ideas you may have! We offer a lovely environment where you can choose to purely invigilate the space and greet visitors. We also provide tea and coffee for our volunteers and regularly update you on the gallery's happenings.
