Sense Education has a position for a PMLD Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist unit with young people with PMLD. We are passionate about helping young people and improving the learning journey for those with SEND.
The PMLD Teaching Assistant role is to support the qualified teacher in the classroom in delivering a sensory curriculum based on the needs of the pupil. Class sizes are usually around 5-7 pupils with 5 TAs and a nurse if required. There is a team of support staff and external professionals supporting the pupils and families.
Depending on your experience, you could be working with primary or secondary aged pupils; we will place you in an environment where you are most effective.
The role:
1. Create a safe and nurturing classroom environment for pupils with PMLD.
2. Communicate effectively with the staffing team and the pupils to create a calm and caring learning environment.
3. Support the Teacher in delivering a sensory curriculum that is personalised for each pupil; you may be expected to fill in reading and learning journals when required.
4. Support with additional sessions such as Physiotherapy, Swimming, and Sensory Play.
5. Use Makaton and pictures for communication.
6. Help with snack times and lunchtimes; some pupils will be fed with specialist feeding equipment.
7. Personal care may be required as part of the role, including hoisting when needed.
The ideal applicant:
1. Will have either work experience or personal experience with young people or adults with PMLD.
2. Will be kind, caring, and patient.
3. Is reliable.
4. Will be adaptable.
5. Ideally has a qualification in care, childcare, or a degree – however, this is not a must.
School hours are 8.30am – 3.30pm. The position is a full-time role with an immediate start, and we will also consider part-time applicants.
