Due to the proposed expansion of the school onto a 3rd site, and also the forthcoming maternity leave of a substantive post-holder, Ysgol Bryn Derw are offering 3 exciting opportunities for existing or aspirational Assistant Head Teachers to work in our growing Special School (opened September 2017) for young people aged 3-19 who have been diagnosed with ASD and associated conditions including highly challenging behaviours and complex learning difficulties. Since opening, the school has grown rapidly from 32 pupils and 24 staff in September 2017, to 111 pupils and over 90 staff across two sites by September 2024. Subject to ratification, the school will add a 3rd site with capacity for 40 learners in September 2025. Ysgol Bryn Derw was inspected by Estyn in March 2020 and received ‘Excellent’ ratings in 4 out of 5 areas. The school also runs an ASD Outreach Service across the LA which was recognised as a ‘Spotlight’ of Best Practice by Estyn in November 2024.
We aim to provide the highest possible standards of education and support for all our pupils regardless of their level of need. We are looking for committed leaders who will thrive on this exciting opportunity to support the development of our school as part of a dynamic Senior Leadership Team. In the role of Assistant Head Teacher, you will experience all aspects of school leadership, including both input into strategic planning and operational leadership of the school, with a particular focus on leading on Curriculum, Teaching and Learning and driving forward provision on one of our sites. Offering inspiring support & challenge to teachers & support staff will be crucial, to help us deliver consistently excellent experiences to all pupils, across all sites, every day.
The Governing Body are committed to appointing Assistant Head Teachers who:
1. Have a genuine commitment and enthusiasm for raising standards across the whole school
2. Have a proven track record of successful strategic leadership and management skills with demonstrable experience in a Special School or other specialist setting
3. Have strong knowledge of ASD specific teaching strategies
4. Are forward thinking, imaginative and visionary, and able to develop a caring, nurturing learning environment
5. Are able to build a relationship of mutual respect with the pupils, parents, staff and the Governing Body
6. Are experienced leaders able to demonstrate the ability to motivate, challenge and inspire staff and children through good interpersonal skills
7. Will develop our commitment to working positively with parents, carers, the local authority and outside agencies
8. Are able to work in partnership with the Head Teacher and Governing Body to continue to raise standards through a shared vision
9. Have experience of leading on aspects of the School Development Plan
10. Share specialist best practice with other specialist and mainstream settings and outside agencies
11. Have excellent organisational and communication skills
