Service Operational Manager (Diagnostics)
Up to £53,000 DOE

Role Summary
We are looking for a full-time Service Operational Manager to lead and oversee the operational delivery of diagnostic services within our healthcare facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient operational performance of NHS and private diagnostic services, maximizing utilization, and improving patient throughput.
You will work closely with Clinical Leads, External Stakeholders, and the Elective Recovery System Lead to address operational issues and ensure the facility meets access, financial, and clinical governance standards. This role also involves bringing together key pathways within the diagnostic care program and supporting new initiatives that align with emerging Department of Health and NHSE strategic directions.
As the Service Operational Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring diagnostic performance benchmarks are met and continuously developing a culture of improvement across the service.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Diagnostic Pathway Management
* Provide guidance to administrative teams involved with the Diagnostic and CDC (Clinical Diagnostic Care) departments.
* Lead diagnostic pathway training using examples from Compucare and other clinical systems.
* Support Unit Leads in managing patient pipelines, ensuring service teams are aware of wait times to prevent duplication of efforts.
* Attend tracking meetings and provide support to Admin Leads and Clinical Leads when required.
* Create and manage Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and crib sheets for diagnostic care processes.
* Prepare weekly performance reports for performance meetings, including DMO1 reporting breaches and capacity vs demand modeling.
* Attend weekly huddle meetings and advise teams on next steps for patients within their PTLs.
Performance Management
* Ensure the safe and smooth delivery of diagnostic services in alignment with the business plan and service frameworks.
* Responsible for meeting diagnostic service targets and performance metrics, including outcome objectives and service line reporting.
* Use available data to track and report on performance, ensuring services meet their targets and reporting requirements.
* Collaborate with the Business Intelligence Team to provide specialty-specific reports to senior leadership.
* Monitor levels of diagnostic activity against expectations and highlight any adverse variances to the Head of Commercial Operations and Operational Teams.
* Incorporate public and patient feedback in the planning and monitoring of services.
Service Improvement
* Collaborate with Unit Leads to develop efficient, high-quality patient-focused diagnostic services.
* Identify opportunities for service redesign and apply service improvement techniques aligned with the organisation’s corporate strategy.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of annual business plans that support the overall strategic goals.
* Participate in the negotiation of service level agreements and provide input on any required changes in service delivery.
* Analyse complex data to identify trends and inform decision-making regarding long-term planning.
* Ensure clinical governance, risk management, and compliance with best practice standards are implemented.
* Support recruitment, retention, training, and development of staff in line with the business plan.
* Oversee staff compliance with HR policies and procedures.
Leadership and Team Development
* Coach, motivate, and lead your team to foster a positive and productive working environment.
* Ensure that all staff have appropriate job-specific and mandatory training and personal development plans.
* Manage reporting on budget positions across the service, supporting financial delivery.
Safeguarding and Health & Safety
* Ensure the safeguarding and welfare of children and vulnerable adults by adhering to safeguarding policies and attending necessary training.
* Take responsibility for health and safety procedures, reporting any issues or accidents promptly.
* Use provided protective equipment and comply with health and safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment.
Skills and Experience
* Significant experience in managing diagnostic services within a healthcare setting.
* Strong understanding of NHS and private sector diagnostic services.
* Excellent leadership and communication skills, with experience managing cross-functional teams.
* Proven ability to analyse performance data and track service performance.
* Experience in developing and implementing service improvement initiatives.
* In-depth knowledge of clinical governance and best practice standards.
* Ability to manage budgets and ensure financial targets are met.
