The post holder will ensure a central role for Medical Education in pursuance of a number of national and local agendas pertaining to the provision and delivery of medical education across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The post carries autonomy in implementing national and more local strategies and carries with it delegated responsibility to make decisions on behalf of the organisation. The post holder will be expected to work across all sites and be based at either Brighton or Worthing sites. A key part of this role will be ensure that we are able to deliver on our current obligations as an education and training provider as well as develop opportunities with Trust colleagues and partners such as Health Education England (HEE), local universities and colleges and other partners to ensure that we are able to deliver the requirements of our commissioned education programmes, apprenticeship and professional development pathways. The post holder will provide an informed understanding, strong leadership, management coordination and a strategic awareness of the various services within the remit of this role. In particular, the post holder will liaise with a number of key external statutory organisations and professionals, service users and Trust staff. The role will manage relationships on behalf of the Trust with key stakeholders including Health Education England Kent, Surrey Sussex, University Partners, Medical Royal College and regulatory bodies. There will be a need to provide operational management advice and support in respect of Medical and Dental Education & Quality to the Director of Medical Education, the Director of Integrated Education, the Chief Medical Officer, Senior Managers and others within or outside of the Medical Education arena, and will manage across traditional boundaries, ensuring the planning, coordination and monitoring of service level objectives. The post holder will make strategic and operational decisions that influence the delivery of front-line Medical and Dental Education and take responsibility for organisational performance and delivery of Medical & Dental Education targets. The role will contribute to the Trust’s wider agenda e.g. around international recruitment and retention of staff, enhanced induction and the development of parallel training curricula. The role will provide strategic direction, leadership, managerial support and development for Medical & Dental Educational Services (Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education) and for Multi-professional Educational Quality and Governance in the Trust. This will include raising the profile of education services across the organisation, as well as externally, and to ensure specialist educationalist knowledge is available to inform strategies that will lead to improvements in service delivery. The post holder will ensure an appropriate learning environment for the delivery of first-class Education. The post holder will have overall operational responsibility for the delivery of medical and dental educational services in the Trust and provide senior management support to the medical and dental education team. They will support and work closely with the DME, Director Integrated Education, Divisional Directors and Clinical Heads of Division. There will also be a need to engage with the Heads of Service to ensure successful delivery of the Medical Education contracts at a local level. Looking forward, there will be a focus on helping build the Trust as a centre of excellence for medical education, helping driving some of the innovative work already taking place within the Trust. This will include seeking further opportunities to build partnerships, link in with regional and national bodies and programs of work. Reporting to the Director of Integrated Education, the post holder will be an experienced, motivated individual with considerable experience of managing an education service at a senior level in a large, complex organisation. There will be a need to provide senior management cover and support to the Trusts integrated education directorate, including representing and deputising for the Director of Integrated Education at meetings and advising on Trust education strategy and direction.
