Somerset NHS Foundation Trust are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to work together as Clinical Teaching Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to join our team from August 2025 (or earlier if available).
The post is full time (40 hours per week) and fixed term for 12 months.
This post is based at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
The successful candidate will have full GMC registration and 2nd on call experience ie. registrar level in General Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The candidate is expected to have good clinical skills in assessing and identifying sick patients and competency in General Obstetrics and Gynaecology at ST3+ level (mandatory).

Main duties of the job
The candidates will join an already well-established team, which includes consultants with special interests in Urogynaecology, Menstrual Dysfunction, Minimal Access surgery, Endometriosis, Fetal Medicine and Maternal Medicine and Gynaecological Oncology.
The selected candidates will have several allocated protected sessions each week to gain formal experience and qualification in teaching under the direct supervision of our consultant team. The teaching role will be alongside an active part in the on call rota with a frequency of 1:8 or less.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will help facilitate the delivery of the University of Bristol and Peninsula undergraduate medical curricula to year 3 and 4 medical students at Musgrove Park Hospital.
In summary, the main duties include:
1. Delivering core curriculum content, acting as tutors and being involved with the assessment of medical students, for example in OSCEs.
2. Case based Learning Facilitation, lecture based, seminar, clinical skills teaching and SIM training.
3. Acting as a role model and mentor to the medical students.
4. Developing own teaching materials, methods and approaches with guidance e.g., bedside teaching.
5. Identifying learning needs of students and defining appropriate learning objectives.
6. Delivering several types of teaching including induction sessions, small group tutorials, clinical-based history and examination sessions, facilitation of inter-Academy Hub sessions, bedside teaching, clinical reasoning skills and simulation based teaching.
7. Supervising the work of students, providing advice on study skills and helping them with learning problems.
8. Acting as a mentor for students and taking an informal role in student pastoral care such as identification of 'at risk' students, offering support and referral to appropriate sources of help.
9. Supporting other clinical education fellows and mentoring as appropriate.
Clinical Duties of the Post
On average half of the working week will be clinical, the other half devoted to teaching of Bristol and Peninsula Medical Students and educational learning, as well as working towards a Certificate in Medical Education.
The weekly clinical programme will vary depending on the on-call rota and availability of other junior staff, but should broadly include:
1. On call duties in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
2. When not on call and not teaching, there will be a programme to include time in theatre, Gynaecology and Antenatal outpatient clinics.
3. Participation in audit, health improvement and research projects in the department with a view to publications and presentation.
