Research Associate / Senior Research Associate (Fixed Term)
Salary: £37,174 / £46,735 - £49,559
Vacancy Reference: EN44448
Closing Date: 23rd March 2025
Are you looking for a collaborative and impact-focused research role within an inspiring, world-leading organisation? Do you want to contribute to our mission to create a more sustainable economy?
The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is a globally influential institute within the University of Cambridge working on a mission to develop leadership and solutions towards a sustainable economy. More information can be found at https://www.cisl.cam.ac.uk/about.
The role
CISL works to develop pioneering ideas, research and resources for better decision-making and system design, including through The King's Global Sustainability Fellowship Programme. Under this programme, we are seeking to appoint a Fellow on a 12 month fixed term contract (extension subject to available funding). This post will be offered as either a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate dependant on level of qualifications and experience and is funded through a philanthropic donation from Heathrow Airport Ltd.
This role will be closely affiliated with a flagship initiative run by CISL in partnership with Cambridge's Whittle Laboratory, the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA). The AIA is the global systems change organisation in aviation, based in the University of Cambridge. Through holistic modelling and convening international experts across industry, governments and academia, we drive the transition to climate-neutral aviation.
As the King's Global Sustainability Fellow in Climate Risk in Aviation, you will work on translating the AIA's 2030 Sustainable Aviation Goals into policy action. This is not a technical role. You will conduct research on policy levers and incentives to drive sustainable aviation. Transforming aviation to make it sustainable is a huge challenge and the development of effective policies supporting pathways to sustainable aviation are essential, given the scale of change involved. The research aims to understand the current policy making process aligned with each goal and identify options to enable and deliver them.
You will work closely with the AIA team, in particular the AIA's engagement team, who convene critical stakeholders to both inform the modelling and translate the insights into policy and business action. The team can facilitate introductions and context setting.
Key skills and experience:
1. Hold a PhD in a relevant specialist subject (or be 'post viva' with a clear timetable for completion)
2. Sufficient breadth and depth of expertise in policy analysis to execute research of a high standard
3. The skills and experience to work independently and manage own workload with limited oversight, while also fostering fruitful collaborations across CISL, the University, and the AIA
4. The creativity and initiative to develop new ideas and the intellectual energy and independent thinking necessary to address questions through research
5. The skills and experience to build generative industry, policy - academic collaborations
6. Clear enthusiasm for (and experience of) generating opportunities for research impact, including stakeholder engagement
7. Ability to communicate research to a broad audience including but not limited to policymakers, technical experts, industry players, investors and general public
What you'll receive:
* 41 days annual leave including bank holidays
* Working 37 hours per week - on a hybrid working basis with at least 2 days a week in our award-winning Cambridge office and at least one day a week at the Whittle Laboratory
* Excellent benefits including a highly desirable pension scheme, discount portal, cycle to work scheme, access to the University accommodation service, relocation support, employee assistance programme, family friendly policies along with many more
Within your application, please include a short outline of how you would approach the research and ensure integration and alignment with the AIA's existing work (250 words maximum) that would be understandable by a general audience.
