The Mechanical Engineering and Design department is looking to place a dynamic and creative individual who can make a strong contribution to our mechanical engineering team and design activities. In return for a fresh, alternative, and innovative approach to our designs, the successful applicant will experience a fast-paced stimulating engineering environment.
This is a placement year opportunity for 12 months, reporting to our Mechanical Design Manager. If successful at interview, you will work on new product development from initial brief, generating design specifications, producing conceptual designs, participating in team design reviews, and completing the detail engineering package. This includes producing manufacturing drawings, procuring a bill of materials, issuing an assembly package, overseeing production, and handing over the final product.
You will also experience working on existing products and systems. The candidate will be given a range of projects over the year and have support from a mentor throughout this time with us. Our placement students will also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with prototyping, 3D printing (in-house), create high resolution concept visuals, and generate artwork as required. Training for all tools and applications used at Formula One will be provided.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Participate in the design, development, and production of high quality, innovative, reliable mechanical solutions with an aesthetic bias (including appropriate documentation).
2. Carry out 3D modelling & 2D design/draught work while maintaining, updating, and modifying existing designs/diagrams.
3. Complete full cycle project/task work, through conception, design, development, prototyping, testing, diagnosing, manufacture, and commissioning.
4. Decompose complex problems and produce simple and effective solutions.
5. Complete all mandatory training within specified timelines.
6. Operate safely at all times in line with Company health and safety requirements.
7. Undertake other duties within your capabilities as your Department Manager or Team Manager may assign to you from time to time.
Knowledge and Skills
1. Understanding of DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly).
2. Hands-on practical skills with a good understanding of aesthetics and ergonomics.
3. Ability to carry out hands-on tasks in the workshop under the supervision of mechanical technicians, including the assembly of prototypes and small volume production runs.
4. Communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate, report, and communicate effectively.
5. The ability to work with minimal supervision.
