Summary
The Signal Maintenance Technician is responsible for the construction and repairs to all the City’s traffic signals, school flashers, flashing beacons, and communication systems. Must live within a 45-minute response time. Rotates on-call for nights, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and emergency calls coming to the department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Performs scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs as assigned.
2. Checks electrical and electronic wiring and connections, inspects detection, cleans cabinets, cleans LED lenses, checks alignment of signal heads; checks programming of solid-state controllers, school flasher time clocks, and communication equipment; ensures proper operation of traffic signals, school flashers, and flashing beacons; installs new equipment as updates require; torque nuts and bolts on school flashers, traffic signals, and mast arms.
3. Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves detection problems such as wiring failures, conflict, and controller issues.
4. Repairs and/or replaces traffic signal, school flasher, warning beacon hardware, and electronic components: signal heads, LEDs, backplates, traffic signal controllers, school flasher time clocks, flashers, load switches, and video detection components; replaces signal cabinets; hangs span wire, pulls traffic signal wire, and replaces communication equipment.
5. Tests solid-state traffic control components: traffic signal controllers, conflict monitors, load switches, school flasher time clocks, and 12V DC batteries.
6. Creates service requests and work orders in the City Works system.
7. Installs traffic signals, school flashers, and flashing beacons; helps set forms, rebar cages, finishes poured concrete; sets poles, mast arms, or span wire; sets controller cabinet and installs signal heads, back plates, and pull/connect wire; installs video detection/radar equipment, installs pull boxes, trenches, and layouts conduit; saw cuts streets for loop wire; installs electrical service.
8. Organizes and maintains traffic signal inventory; shelves new stock in storage, stocks trucks with materials, and notifies foreman of low quantities.
9. Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations
1. Valid Class A CDL or ability to obtain CDL within 6 months from date of hire.
2. IMSA Certifications in Traffic Signals (preferred).
