Head of Design – Residential Architectural Practice
Are you an experienced architect ready to lead a growing residential architectural practice? Our client, a specialist practice focused on bespoke domestic new builds, extensions, and conversions, are looking for a Head of Design to take charge of their creative direction, practice operations, and the responsibility of winning new business.
This is an exciting opportunity for an ARB-registered Architect with 10+ years post-qualification experience, a strong portfolio of completed projects, and a passion for high-end residential design. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the practice’s design approach, overseeing design-related activities, and driving new project acquisition.
The Role:
As the Head of Design, you will lead the design process across all stages of projects, from client briefs through to project completion, while also contributing to the practice’s business development efforts. Your responsibilities will include:
* Leading and managing the overall design strategy.
* Overseeing the design team and ensuring high standards of creativity, innovation, and technical excellence.
* Directly managing client relationships and leading project teams.
* Mentoring and developing junior and mid-level staff, ensuring the continued growth of the practice.
* Coordinating across all RIBA stages.
* Developing design proposals, presentations, and tender documentation.
* Actively winning new work through client engagement, presentations, and proposals.
* Ensuring compliance with regulations, quality control, and project budgets.
* Managing the day-to-day operations of the practice, including overseeing project delivery, client communications, and team workflow.
The Person:
To excel in this role, you will need:
* ARB registration.
* 10+ years post-qualification experience in residential architecture.
* Expertise in Revit and AutoCAD (high proficiency required).
* A proven track record in leading projects from concept to completion.
* Strong leadership and team management experience, with the ability to inspire and develop your team.
* Excellent client-facing and communication skills, with a proven ability to win new business and build long-term client relationships.
* A passion for high-quality residential design and an eye for detail.
* Strong project management and organisational skills
