Following the success of the first two waves of our trainee nurse programme, NHS Greater Manchester (Oldham) is pleased to announce that recruitment is now underway for the next phase of its Trainee Practice Nurse Programme. This is a fantastic opportunity for motivated, ambitious, qualified nurses to be trained as practice nurses whilst working in general practice.
The Programme will last for a minimum of 6 months, allowing nurses to spend 4 days per week in general practice receiving practical, on-the-job training and 1 day per week receiving bespoke training in areas such as phlebotomy, childhood immunisation, respiratory and long-term condition management.
The programme outline is as follows:
1. Fixed-term contract with the host organisation
2. Placement with an Oldham general practice
3. Four days per week, on-the-job training
4. One day per week fully funded day release for training or self-study
5. Employment within an Oldham general practice upon the completion of training
Upon successful completion of the training programme, nurses will be given a substantive employment contract with an Oldham practice.
Successful applicants will benefit from learning whilst working during their training period, as well as the opportunity to share their experiences with each other.
The Programme is open to any NMC-registered nurse, or nurses who will qualify by November 2024. Applicants must be prepared to work in a general practice setting anywhere in the borough of Oldham.
Main duties of the job
This role is part of the Oldham Practice Nurse Training Scheme, which will support a cohort of nurses to be trained as practice nurses in Oldham. Nurses will be employed full-time by the host organisation for a minimum period of 6 months, spending 4 days a week in practice and 1 day per week in formal training or self-study. Upon completion of training, the expectation is that each nurse will then be employed full-time by an Oldham general practice.
The training plan will include training in the following areas:
* Infection control
* Safeguarding
* Behavioural & lifestyle Change
* Respiratory
* Prevention, identification & management of diabetes and other long-term conditions
* Childhood immunisation
* CHD
* Frailty
* Contraception
* Mental health
* Cytology
Primary Care relies upon the provision of practice nurses in order to deliver its core contract: this includes the provision of cervical smears, immunisations including childhood immunisations, chronic disease monitoring and public health interventions delivered in primary care. Practice Nurses are also responsible for infection control, safe storage of vaccines and often the emergency drugs held within a practice. This role is vital to the quality and delivery of primary care.

The postholder will be based at an Oldham general practice and may be required to work across sites, as required. The postholder may be expected to travel locally to undertake their duties and/or training.
Job responsibilities
Key Working Relationships
The post holder will be expected to establish and maintain relationships in their host practice, including clinical and administrative colleagues, as well as patients. Other key relationships will include other professionals, such as community service staff, and those working in external agencies.
In addition to relationships with their clinical supervisor and mentor, the postholder will also be expected to participate in activities directly related to the training scheme, including training groups and peer support networks.

Perform cervical screening and promote breast awareness (following appropriate training).

Undertake accredited training in specific chronic disease management as or if required, e.g. diabetes, respiratory, epilepsy, CHD etc. (following appropriate training).
Contribute to the maintenance of the practice diseases registers.
Provide advice on lifestyle issues, assist and support patients in changing their unhealthy behaviours and refer appropriately.
Recognise the signs of child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse, addictive behaviours, suicidal tendencies and is aware of local, referral procedures.
Apply infection control measures when collecting and handling laboratory specimens, disposing of waste materials, dealing with blood and body fluids spillages and report and treat sharps injuries.
Undertake first aid and management of emergencies, e.g. burns, haemorrhage, hypo/hyperglycaemic emergencies / asthma attacks.
Undertake annual training and demonstrate competency in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques.
Assist GPs to help deliver effective implementation of management of patients with chronic diseases, as detailed by the Quality and Outcomes framework.
Assist the clinical team by triaging patients' telephone requests for appointments and attention.
Strategy / Policy / Service Development and Implementation
Work within codes of practice and professional guidelines.
Ensure that current evidence-based approaches to patient care are standard practice.
Contribute to the development of policies / protocols / guidelines within the practice.
Aid the practice team with implementation of new initiatives in the delivery of chronic disease management services.

Responsible for equipment used, handling patient valuables and ordering supplies, on a regular basis and as required.

Provide professional support to colleagues, particularly reviewing and monitoring patients in a primary care setting.

Participate in chronic disease management clinics within the practice (only after appropriate training).

Information resources
Keep accurate and up to date records of all consultations in accordance with practice and NMC guidelines.
Formulate reports as required for the practice manager and/or senior nurse.
Review patient letters filing normal results where appropriate, for example smear and diabetic retinopathy.
Physical Effort
Undertake light or moderate physical effort in regard to carrying out patient assessments.

The postholder is required to work within codes of practice and professional guidelines.
The postholder will be expected to see patients and work to the practice schedule of booked appointments.
Some work may be supervised as part of the training period, if required, whilst other assessments may be undertaken without supervision.

Working Conditions
The postholder will be working in a general practice environment and interacting with patients, which can occasionally be physically and emotionally demanding.
