Permanent; Full time
Commencing: September 2025
Closing date: 24 February 2025 at 12 noon
An opportunity has arisen for a talented and passionate teacher to join the English Department at Haileybury.
The School is looking for a dynamic and committed teacher, with a degree in a related subject, to teach from Lower School 1 through to the Upper Sixth. The Lower School pupils (Years 7 and 8) follow a course that introduces them to a wide sweep of English literary history, from Beowulf to Paradise Lost. In Removes (Year 9) the pupils encounter a Shakespeare play as well as a bespoke short story unit.
Middle School (Year 10 and 11) pupils study a range of modern poetry, drama, and prose as part of their Edexcel IGCSE syllabus, whilst the Sixth Form pupils explore a range of texts as part of either the OCR A level course, or the International Baccalaureate, for which there is significant uptake.
The department runs an extension group for pupils aspiring to study English at Oxbridge and other top universities, whilst ‘The Poetry Quarter’, the department’s poetry club, meets weekly. Students are also encouraged to enter an array of national and international writing competitions, including the Tower Poetry Competition and the Orwell Youth Prize.
Previous experience of teaching English at GCSE, A Level and/or IB is desirable but not essential. The ideal candidate will employ a variety of teaching methods to engage and inspire pupils, confidently integrate digital tools into their teaching and encourage independent thinking while challenging students beyond the curriculum.
Please see the candidate brief for more information.
