Unit Mission Statement: The mission of VIMS and William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science through research, education, and advisory service.
Position Summary: The Laboratory and Field Manager manages the day-to-day activities of the wetlands program, including coordination of field and lab efforts, and works independently on their own research. Responsibilities include:
* Lead long-term monitoring of coastal ecosystems (e.g., elevation and soil surveys, vegetation surveys, water quality measurements).
* Guide students and lab members in field and laboratory skills and assist in project design.
* Work on multiple projects and participate in cross-organization collaborations.
* Provide logistics and administrative support (e.g., purchasing, travel, data management).
* Conduct independent research leveraging expertise.
Conditions of Employment
* Occasional field work during nights and weekends (less than 1 weekend per month).
* Frequent work in adverse weather conditions.
* Ability to lift and carry heavy objects and walk long distances across uneven terrain.
* Ability to obtain a driver’s license, drone pilot certification, and operate VIMS small boats with appropriate training.
Required Qualifications
* B.S. degree in Geology, Biology, or Environmental Science.
* Experience collecting biophysical measurements in challenging field environments.
* Experience conducting basic laboratory procedures.
* General knowledge of coastal systems, including biological and geological processes.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to guide students or groups.
Preferred Qualifications
* Advanced Degree (MS or above) in a related field or 2 years of equivalent experience.
* Experience in coastal environments including stratigraphic methods and project design.
* Experience leading multi-day trips in strenuous conditions.
* Experience working with multiple stakeholders.
* Operation of boats, drones, and GPS equipment.
* Analytical skills including statistics and GIS/remote sensing.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* Strong organizational skills including data management.
