Yes, you’ll learn from us, but we expect to learn from you too General Summary: This position reports to the Head of Performance Systems or their designee; is located in Banbury, UK. Responsible for leading and delivering a driver in the loop (DIL) simulator for the Formula One team in the first instance and then focusing on larger upgrade projects and continual development of the simulator to support our future car design and race engineering requirements. This position is heavily involved with the development of simulator specific hardware and software research and development activities and will work closely with our inhouse Simulation, Electronics, Systems and Performance departments along with technology partners as appropriate. General Responsibilities: Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments. Manage department personnel from recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement through to separation. Mentor, train and guide personnel as required. Develop staff using effective performance reviews and development plans. Responsible for establishing standard operating procedures and budgets to maintain a practical yet functional department. Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations. Adhere to all engineering and wider business processes. Follow all safety regulations in all venues. Assumes any responsibilities and duties delegated by the Head of Performance Systems or their designee. Key Responsibilities : Team Specific : Be the main reference for DIL activities for Aerodynamics, Performance and Race Engineering Groups. Liaise with suppliers and manage supplier upgrades/integration for the DIL infrastructure. Maintain alignment of simulator hardware and software where needed to ensure the ability to reuse programming information from the trackside environment for the DIL. Plan for future requirements like new ECU introduction or new regulation changes that will need to be tested with the DIL technology. Work with the Performance and Aero departments to ensure DIL/track correlation is achieved to a high level, whether that is via tuning of existing models or adding needed functionality to the vehicle model or other simulator sub systems. Follow the developments in relevant and new technologies that impact the simulator infrastructure world and propose new opportunities to the Head of Performance Systems to improve the technology when possible. Ensure that the operation of the DIL simulator is always carried out in a safe environment. Education and Work Experience: Minimum BSc in any STEM subject, but preferably qualified to postgraduate level with substantial experience in applied mathematics or engineering activities. Previous experience in a DIL simulator hardware/software environment in a development capacity within a motorsport or high-level automotive environment. Proven experience in managing a group or project deliverable. Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Knowledge of DIL simulator hardware, software, and integration of SECU code for DIL applications. Ability to plan and organize project activities with other team members to meet a deadline. A can-do positive approach and a willingness to help others including mentoring junior members of the group is essential. Developing and using models in Mathworks Simulink / C++. Motion cueing and vestibular system modelling knowledge would be desirable. Graphics rendering experience with RFactorPro would be desirable. Hardware-in-the-loop systems experience is essential. Real time systems experience of systems such as Concurrent, Speed Goat or DSpace. Equipment and Applications: Solid computer knowledge, preferred experience in Microsoft Office products. High level knowledge of computing languages like MATLAB or Python, and/or Modelica based programs would be useful. Strong knowledge and experience of the McLaren Electronic Systems toolset including ATLAS and System Monitor. Work Environment Physical Demands: An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require occasional domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends. This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids.
