Job Title: Teaching Assistant - 1:1 Complex Needs
Location: Oldham, Lancashire
Hours: Full-time (8:30 AM - 3:30 PM)
Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join a nurturing school environment located in Oldham, Lancashire. The successful candidate will provide 1:1 support to a Key Stage 1 (KS1) pupil with complex needs, including undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as challenges related to low-level disruption. This role requires an individual who can offer both in-class and out-of-class support, with a particular emphasis on phonics instruction.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide tailored 1:1 support for a pupil with complex needs, focusing on creating a supportive and structured learning environment.
2. Work in close collaboration with the class teacher and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) to implement individual education and behavior plans.
3. Apply effective strategies to manage low-level disruptive behavior, ensuring a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.
4. Support the development of the pupil’s literacy skills, with a particular focus on phonics.
5. Facilitate the pupil’s access to the curriculum, differentiating materials and activities as necessary to meet their individual learning needs.
6. Monitor and track the pupil’s progress, providing regular feedback to the teacher and parents/carers.
7. Assist with the development of social skills both in the classroom and during break times, encouraging positive interactions with peers.
8. Accompany the pupil to various settings outside the classroom, including specialised sessions, to provide consistent support throughout the school day.
9. Engage in ongoing professional development to better support the pupil’s unique needs and stay up to date with best practices in education for children with ASC and ADHD.
Requirements:
1. Experience working with children with SEN, particularly with undiagnosed ASC and ADHD.
2. A patient, empathetic approach and the ability to remain calm and focused under challenging circumstances.
3. Proficiency in teaching phonics and supporting early literacy development.
4. Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a willingness to work closely with teachers, parents, and other professionals.
5. An understanding of safeguarding procedures and the commitment to safeguarding the welfare of children.
6. NVQ Level 2 or 3 for Teaching Assistants, or an equivalent qualification, is preferred.
7. A current Enhanced DBS check or willingness to undergo one.
