Purpose of Job As Lead Infrastructure Engineer, you will play a critical role in enhancing the University’s ICT services. This senior position requires expertise in network and server support, coupled with strong project management capabilities. You’ll work as part of the IT Services team, making impactful decisions and ensuring the smooth operation of our network infrastructure. The role involves both behind-the-scenes system maintenance and user-facing support, particularly for students accessing wireless and accommodation networks. Key Responsibilities Helpdesk Support: Responding to user queries on supported applications and services. Troubleshooting connectivity issues, especially wireless and accommodation networks. Installing and configuring hardware and software as required. Supporting the Marketing Department with website back-end maintenance and security. Network and Service Maintenance: Managing and maintaining the University’s wired and wireless network infrastructure. Monitoring network performance and implementing capacity planning. Keeping up-to-date with network technologies and security best practices. Security: Ensuring the overall security of the University’s data and networks. Project Management: Planning and implementing new IT services and infrastructure improvements. Taking responsibility for all aspects of network projects, including timelines and outcomes. Collaborating with other departments, particularly Estates/Maintenance. Team Leadership: Managing the infrastructure team and setting objectives in line with annual goals. Leading departmental projects and deputising for the IT Manager when necessary. Required Technical Skills Expertise in installing, securing, and administering TCP/IP Ethernet networks (cabling, firewalls, switches, routers, VLANs, VPNs). Knowledge of scripted administration (e.g., VBScript, PowerShell, Bash). Experience with managing DHCP/DNS servers on Linux and Windows platforms. Proficiency in maintaining virtualised server and storage platforms. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 security management. General and Interpersonal Skills Excellent documentation and attention to detail. Strong project and time management abilities, with the capacity to foresee challenges. At least three years of demonstrable experience in designing and managing business-critical networks. A degree or equivalent extensive experience. Proactive and solution-oriented approach.
