Job summary Applications are invited for a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Hand and Wrist Surgery, based at Barnsley Hospital. The position is offered for 12 months fixed term with the potential to become substantive. The Orthopaedic department currently has thirteen substantive consultants an. The service provides a comprehensive Elective and Trauma service to a population of approx 225,000. The department also has one part time consultant providing specialist paediatric services from Sheffield Childrens Hospital. The Trust has 47 inpatient orthopaedic beds, 28 trauma and 16 elective, three laminar flow theatres dedicated to Orthopaedics with a fourth laminar flow available for emergency work and a dedicated day surgery unit. There is also exciting work on going for an additional laminar flow theatre. At Barnsley we are in partnership with local Trusts; Doncaster and Rotherham to utilise the Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre. This comprises of two orthopaedic theatres with a dedicated green pathway aimed to provide high levels of productivity and efficiency. As part of a dedicated and cohesive orthopedic team, you will have the chance to be part of, and influence how the department makes a difference to its patients. The post offers excellent experience within the specialty. There is ample opportunity for continuing professional development and the teaching of junior and middle grade doctors on linked rotations. Main duties of the job The arrangement of duties will be as such and may be agreed from time to time between the employing Trust(s) and the appointed individual. The successful candidate, working in the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, will be expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and to take note of standing orders, strategic and financial instructions, and amendments to protocols as notified. Additionally, there is an expectation that the appointment would undertake elective theatre sessions will be at Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre or within Barnsley Hospital. The detailed job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate on appointment. The successful applicant will be contracted to 10 PA s per week on average. Nine consultants currently participate in the on-call rota (1:9). This will change to 1:10 with this new locum post. This on-call attracts 1.25-1.375 PAs, Category A with 3% salary supplement. As per the 2003 terms and conditions, consultants are expected to be able to reach the hospital within 30 minutes when on call.
