If so, we have the perfect role for you We are on a mission to transform the way we travel, and we’re looking for two enthusiastic STARS School Engagement Officers to join us in encouraging schools to create greener, healthier, and more active travel habits. About the Role As the STARS School Engagement Officer, you’ll play a vital role in increasing the number of schools across Sheffield actively delivering school travel plans and achieving Modeshift STARS accreditation. This is your chance to empower schools, students, and families to embrace sustainable journeys and reduce their environmental footprint. You’ll work hands-on with the Sheffield school community, providing tailored support to promote, encourage, and enable active travel options like walking, cycling, and scooting. Beyond schools, you’ll act as an ambassador for the Modeshift STARS programme, forging partnerships with local authorities, external stakeholders and families to build a network of champions for sustainable travel. Key Responsibilities Create, implement and monitor a School Engagement Plan in partnership with your colleagues. Support schools in the adoption and use of Modeshift STARS system, helping schools achieve and maintain STARS Education accreditation. Provide support, guidance, advice and motivation to school-based staff in the development of action plans to deliver sustainable travel behaviour change. Organise events, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness and inspire behaviour change. Support Sheffield Council in the implementation of sustainable travel initiatives, including supporting schools to run campaigns or activities that will help them become accredited. Promote a range of local, regional and national sustainable travel activities, offers and campaigns to participating schools to encourage engagement across Sheffield whilst ensuring Health & Safety procedures are followed at all times. Monitor progress and celebrate successes, working with key partners and stakeholders including local authority officers, road safety officers, police and public health to ensure schools stay motivated and on track. Preparing and presenting detailed reports each term. What We’re Looking For We’re seeking a dynamic and motivated individual with: A passion for sustainability and active travel. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with schools, students, and stakeholders including written, face to face, online and telephone. Strong organisational skills to manage multiple schools and projects effectively and working under pressure to meet deadlines. Experience using MS Office in particular Word and Excel. Experience of delivering training, workshops and events. Knowledge or experience in sustainable transport, education, or community engagement (preferred). Ability to travel to schools within Sheffield on a regular basis as well as occasional overnight stays away from home. Weekends and late morning may also occasionally be required.
