Advanced Specialist Orthoptist, Lead Clinical Tutor

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Advanced Specialist Orthoptist, Lead Clinical Tutor at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to cover maternity leave for a fixed term post of 12 months.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain a broad range of experience. The Trust's main two sites are Ashford Hospital and St. Peter's Hospital and we also provide services at Woking Community Hospital. Day case surgery takes place in dedicated theatres at Ashford Hospital with Paediatric and other selected surgeries at St Peter's Hospital.
Main duties of the job
* To provide high quality Orthoptic care as an autonomous advanced practitioner. To assess, diagnose and manage all categories of patients referred to the Orthoptic service provided by Ashford and St.Peter's Hospitals (ASPH) NHS Foundation Trust.
* To be the Orthoptic department's education service lead for the education of pre-registration Optometrists, medical students, trainee GPs, Nurses and AHPs. They will also mentor newly appointed junior Orthoptic staff including preceptorship of Orthoptists within the department.
* To share the Orthoptic Team Leader Role with other band 7.
Job responsibilities
The department is an accredited clinical undergraduate Orthoptic training centre; the post holder will develop and lead the Orthoptic undergraduate placements within the department. The post holder will be their mentor and clinical supervisor. The post holder will be required to undertake a significant amount of clinical teaching, create student timetables, conduct student induction, deliver formative and summative student feedback as required.
Person Specification
* 5 years experience in Orthoptics
* Attended BIOS clinical tutors course/teaching qualification
* Minimum 2 years teaching clinical Orthoptic skills to other health care professionals including Orthoptic students
* Registration with the HCPC
* Diploma from the British Orthoptic Council or BMEDSci or BSc Orthoptics degree
* Further post-graduate qualification/masters level relating to a highly specialist aspect of Orthoptics
* Experience in secondary screening
* Experience as team leader/deputising for Head Orthoptist
* Previous experience as lead clinical tutor for Orthoptic students
* Knowledge of the Clinical Tutor Handbooks of Sheffield, Liverpool and Glasgow Universities and UCL Master of Orthoptics course
* Experience assessing stroke patients; in ward and outpatients
* Extensive experience of assessing patients (adults and children) with barriers to understanding including those with mental and/or physical disability, stroke, dementia and difficult and challenging behaviour
* Good planning skills and the ability to work under pressure
* Experience in research
* Experience using Cerner/Evolve/Electronic patient record system
