Senior Practice Development Nurse Critical Care, Band 8a
Fixed-Term: 18 months
Part-Time: 18.75 hours per week

The post holder will be a clearly identifiable senior clinical staff member. They will have significant clinical experience, provide sound clinicalexpertiseto their team, and coordinate and deliver high quality care.
The Senior Practice Development Nurse(Senior PDN)for critical careis responsible fordeveloping and implementing an education and training strategy for ICU and CCOT services, in line with corporate and local initiatives and in collaboration with colleagues.
They will promote excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education,consultancyand research. The senior PDN also line manages the PDN’s on both AICU
• The Senior Practice Development Nurse (Senior PDN) for critical care is responsible for developing and implementing an education and training strategy for ICU and CCOT services, in line with corporate and local initiatives and in collaboration with colleagues
There are a number of key achievables:
• o provide excellent bedside education to the multi-disciplinary team within critical care.
• To have a strategic role in the promotion of advanced nursing and teaching skills within the trust.
• To aid the development of all of staff within critical care.
• To develop the provision of a developmental, educational and supportive environment.
• To lead on the development and implementation of in-house training programmes in relation to critical care for all staff.
• To provide critical care oversight to increase the uptake of critical care training to provide a robust resilient workforce to support critical care in a surge capacity.
• Along with the critical care matrons (ICU & CCOT) and lead nurse for critical care, actively participate and contribute to research and audit projects within the service.
• Support and contribute to the integration of critical care services as part of the hospital redevelopment, bringing about new ways of working.
• Facilitate development and implementation of standards, guidelines, protocols and pathways for patients requiring critical care.

Clinical:
· To act as an excellent role model and develop own clinical expertise,assisting colleagues to develop advanced knowledge and skills in order to benefit the treatment and care of critically ill patients
· The post holder will undertake direct patient care within a clinical shift; role modelling to others within the unit and maintaining clinical skills.
· To provide professional advice to ICU staff, patients and families in relation to theorganisationand delivery of care.
· To assist in establishing, implementing and monitoring Trustguidelines, policiesand protocols.
· To facilitate all senior staff in the production of clinical guidelines to produce a guideline.
· To collaborativelyidentifyareas for promoting and facilitating the development of nursing practice.
· To ensure adequate education and training has taken occurred before the introduction of new equipment within the unit.
· To act as a lead in the unit for the implementation of all national and local policies and initiatives which include the national benchmarks, care bundles and research projects.
· To act as an expert professional and clinical adviser to clinical support.
· Ensure that standards are maintained within the NMC code of Professional Conduct.
• To support the development of information systems within and their use within the unit.
Leadership and Management:
· To take responsibility for the instigation of good clinical practice based on sound research findings.
· To support the Research team and maintain own research activities.
· To identify and undertake collaborative research with others.
· To facilitate, encourage and support staff through the research process.
· Respond to Datix incidents relating to performance/capability/education & skills and ensure appropriate communication of relevant educational and professional actions
· To lead in the audit and evaluation of nursing care and practice.
· To act as the unit representative at the NWLCCN nurses meeting.
· Demonstrates professional leadership of the nursing service within the sphere of the role.
· Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the Lead Nurse and all members of the multi-disciplinary team and key people within the Trust.
· Participate in the recruitment and retention of staff
· To manage the practice development Team.
· To co-ordinate and maintain own Appraisal and give 360 feedback on the Bands 7s as requested reports
· Todeputisefor the Lead Nurse in their absence.
· To support and facilitate all members of the nursing team tofulfiltheir management, practice, education, consultancy and research responsibilities
Education and Research:
• To act as a role model as both an informal and formal teacher/facilitator
• To identify the educational needs of the nursing staff on the unit, through overseeingthe implementation of the critical care Learning and development strategy andeffectively evaluate and seek to improve educational delivery
• Co-ordinates with the PDN’s/ matrons, annual bids for academic funding/continuing professional development.
• Toliaisewith the relevant persons to identify resources and opportunities for education and training, e.g., Assistant Director of Nursing for Education re allocation of contacts for courses, Corporate Nursing Team.
• Act as an ICU representative in the course management and curricula development forums and liaise with Higher Education Institutes in order to present future needs and requirements.
• To be responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of specific educationprogrammesfor all levels of staff on the unit
• To co-ordinate the critical care program in liaison with the course Tudor
• To liaise with the Lead Nurse for Critical Care in identifying and developing the skills of ward nurses.
• To co-ordinate the organisation, development and implementation of the team projects.
• To provide clinical supervision/ action learning for staff and to promote the Trust’s strategy for clinical supervision.
• To be responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the practice development strategy in liaison with unit staff and the practice development team
· To develop and evaluate orientation programmes for all grades of staff
• Maintain an up to date knowledge base, ensuring personal academic credibility.
• To deliver education using a variety of different teaching methods, including: lecture, discussion groups, skills teaching and simulation
• To recognise the importance of advancing technology in education and actively incorporate the appropriate use of technology in the design and delivery of courses
• To provide small group teaching, including the use of Simulated Patients as is appropriate
