Secondary Systems Control & Protection Design / Lead Engineer
Siemens Mobility have an exciting opportunity for Secondary Systems Control & Protection Design / Lead Engineers to join our expanding Rail Infrastructure Electrification Power Conversion Engineering Team in York, UK.

This is a unique opportunity to work with specialists advancing railway electrification for key UK and global clients alongside our German Engineering Team. As a Secondary Design / Lead Engineer, reporting to the Principal / Senior Design Engineer (Secondary Systems), you’ll support and deliver high-quality control and protection designs for Power Conversion projects, ensuring they meet environmental, safety, cost, and program standards on time.
You‘ll make a difference by
1. Preparing hardware designs and circuit diagrams for control & protection panels for high voltage AC Substations and Converter Stations utilising Power Electronics.
2. Confirming technical clarifications with customers, EPCs and consultants on selection of appropriate secondary systems, control and protection equipment according to customer requirements.
3. Creating project specific technical specifications, documents, manuals, etc. and detailed design/configuration of project specific secondary systems, control & protection designs.
4. Preparing work packages for sub-suppliers including supervision and quality assurance in the fields of secondary systems and control & protection designs and support by the acceptance/functional tests including occasional business trips.
5. Conducting customer training and support PreFAT/FAT and commissioning activities.
6. Mentoring junior designers, sharing your expertise to elevate the overall quality and performance of the team.
7. Participating in brief design-related site visits, ensuring that designs are implemented successfully and addressing any on-site challenges.
8. Engaging in continuous learning and knowledge sharing to maintain the highest standards of design quality and innovation.
9. Designing work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary, to fulfil the Company obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations.
Your success will be grounded by
1. Having a BSc, BEng or MEng degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
2. Being a member of the IET or other recognised Professional body.
3. Having proven experience in design & implementation of secondary systems, control & protection designs in substation design engineering preferably utilising Power Electronics technologies in HVDC and/or FACTS projects, with emphasis on checking of designs.
4. Having experience with Secondary systems, control & protection automated design software such as ELCAD, Engineering base, Comos / CAD / Bentley design systems including MicroStation and ProjectWise.
5. Being fully conversant with the latest Transmission, Distribution and/or Railway standards & technologies; preferably with practical construction experience.
6. Understanding of the key interfaces between design, construction and commissioning.
7. Having a good knowledge of Project Safety requirements, Health & Safety standards (including CDM regulations) applicable to the design of High Voltage substations.
