The Medical Pathway Lead (MPL) will play a pivotal role in managing patients prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., Saxenda, Wegovy, Mounjaro) and those requiring complex care pathways due to co-morbid conditions or high BMI. The MPL will liaise closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and Clinical Lead to ensure the safe and effective medical management of patients.
Main duties of the job
* Lead the medical pathway for patients prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists and other pharmacological weight management interventions.
* Oversee the triage and assessment of patients by the multi-disciplinary team to determine eligibility for medical, surgical, or non-surgical pathways.
* Collaborate closely with the Clinical Lead and Consultant Physicians to ensure that high-risk patients receive the specialist care they require.
* Manage a complex patient caseload, ensuring individualised treatment plans align with NICE guidelines (NG207, NG189) and best practice standards.
* Provide clinical oversight for the pharmacological prescribing process, ensuring patients are appropriately monitored for efficacy and safety.
Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Collaboration
* Work closely with dietitians, psychologists, and physicians to deliver an integrated care approach.
* Ensure seamless transitions between Tier 3 and Tier 4 services, supporting patients referred for bariatric surgery.
* Chair weekly complex case review meetings, providing clinical leadership on challenging cases.
* Work with the management team to continuously improve the medical weight management pathway.
* Ensure adherence to NHSE, NICE, and CQC clinical governance standards.
* Collaborate with pharmacy services and prescribing teams to manage prescriptions and medication supply.
* Lead on data reporting, ensuring clinical outcomes and service performance indicators are accurately recorded and reported.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* A minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience in a relevant clinical setting (e.g., obesity medicine, diabetes, endocrinology, primary care, or mental health).
* Extensive experience managing complex patient caseloads within a healthcare setting.
* Demonstrable experience working within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and liaising with senior clinicians.
* Strong understanding of GLP-1 receptor agonists and weight management pharmacotherapy.
* Excellent knowledge of obesity-related co-morbidities (e.g., Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Sleep Apnoea).
* Previous experience working in a specialist weight management service (Tier 3 or Tier 4).
* Experience in an NHS or public health setting.
* Advanced training in obesity medicine or nutrition and metabolism.
* Familiarity with CQC compliance and NHSE weight management service requirements.
