Everything created by Battle Systems requires graphic design work. Some of it supports the products, from packaging to promotional images, while in most cases it is the product – our award-winning card terrain is all illustrated digitally and overlaid onto handmade physical prototypes. Our design workload is overflowing so we need more help!
This is a specialised graphic design role for our own little niche in the tabletop gaming industry. We need someone who understands how to construct miniature buildings and all manner of other objects in 3D using 2D flat-pack components, texture those components in our signature style, and prepare them for production.
There is no closing date for this vacancy – we’re waiting for the right person. We’re aware that finding someone with existing experience of cardboard terrain design is unlikely, but if you think your skills could be repurposed in this way, please get in touch!
Core Responsibilities
1. Create original concepts for new terrain pieces, with an understanding of how they can be physically constructed considering the constraints of the 2D materials
2. Prototype and adjust the required components to assemble the concepts in 3D
3. Create artwork and textures in a realistic style to illustrate new components
4. Lay out production files following provided templates and specifications
5. Work with the rest of the design team to ensure consistency of style and technique across our product ranges
6. Review proofs and production samples and liaise with manufacturers and other collaborators to make adjustments
Additional Responsibilities
The graphic design workload at Battle Systems is varied. While terrain design usually takes up most of the time, we also need to create game rules and components, packaging, and promotional imagery. These tasks may be shared across our design team depending on the circumstances at the time. Therefore, you may also need to:
1. Create designs for game components and supporting materials following a brief. All information must be presented clearly, consistently, and in line with how it will be used by the customer
2. Edit photographs and other imagery for use in packaging, marketing materials, gameplay diagrams, etc.
3. Lay out web/print-ready files for books, cards, boxes and other components following provided templates and specifications
4. Create terrain assembly instructions in pdf format using photos, renders, drawings or other suitable method
5. Support the marketing and sales teams with any required imagery
About You
Our ideal candidate will:
1. Have an understanding of 3D design, maybe in a professional capacity from a similar role creating MDF buildings/3D puzzles/etc, or on a personal level from experience scratch-building gaming terrain or similar
2. Be able to create textures and artwork in a realistic style consistent with our existing products
3. Have a high level of proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
4. Have experience of a wide range of printed components, including books, boxes, cards, and die-cut punchboards
5. Work efficiently under their own initiative
6. Be able to accept feedback and adjust their work accordingly
7. Have knowledge of tabletop gaming to understand what concepts will be thematically appropriate, how the components will be physically used, and how that affects their design
8. Be original – we avoid simply recreating designs seen elsewhere – wherever possible our designs are unique to us, trying to offer a twist on seemingly ubiquitous terrain
9. Be eager to work in a growing business and influence our future prospects
Location and Working Requirements
This is a full-time role with flexible working arrangements. You will be required to attend our office in Redditch, UK on a regular basis for collaborations with the team, but you may otherwise work from home or another location of your choice. The exact split of office/home hours will vary dependent on the workload at the time.
Generally, we expect you to work 37.5 hours per week, 9-5 Monday to Friday, but when you’re not attending the office the exact hours and days are flexible.
From time to time you will be required to work weekends to attend conventions and other events, and you will be given time off in lieu.
There is no fixed start date for this role – we’re just looking for the right person to fill the gap in our team. We’re happy to take someone on immediately if they meet all the criteria, but we can be flexible around each candidate’s circumstances.
Salary
The base salary for this role is £30,000 – £40,000 p.a. depending on skills and experience. All required equipment will be provided, and expenses paid where appropriate.
We offer 25 days’ paid holiday (plus bank holidays) and a NEST pension scheme.
There will be opportunities for pay increases each year depending on your contribution to the business and the economic climate.
You will of course also receive a generous staff discount on all Battle Systems products.
How to Apply
