Sheltered Housing is purpose-built accommodation offering support for people 55 years and over who need support in maintaining their independence. Residents have their own tenancy agreement with Portsmouth City Council and can live independently in their own accommodation with the reassurance that support is available as needed. The Support Assistant role is crucial in ensuring we meet our purpose. Role Overview You will be working in a Portsmouth City Council Category 2.5 Sheltered Housing Scheme, currently at Nicholson Gardens, with the possibility of working in other schemes as needed. You will be part of a Support Assistant team under the supervision of the Scheme Manager, who will provide you with induction and guidance to gain confidence in the role, alongside other training for your personal development. Your responsibilities include providing day-to-day help to residents, which may involve domestic help or personal reassurance. You will liaise with care agencies, social workers, GPs, chemists, and residents' families. You need to manage emergencies, assist frailer residents with personal care, and handle challenging behavior when necessary. Candidate Requirements Have a caring nature, enjoy talking to people, and have good listening skills. Have a professional approach to your work. Have good written skills and basic numeracy. Be prepared to provide domestic help to residents and assist with personal care in emergencies. Be physically able to participate in moving and handling tasks. Be a good team worker, able to work alone and deal with challenging situations calmly. Have basic IT skills, e.g., Microsoft Word and Outlook. Be flexible and reliable, working mainly in one scheme but prepared to assist in others as needed. Ability to converse comfortably with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English.
