Oxford International College (OIC) Brighton is an international day and boarding college for students aged 13 to 18. The Role
The College Nurse plays a vital role in providing high-quality medical care and support to both students and staff, effectively managing illnesses and injuries while promoting overall health and well-being. This role involves delivering evidence-based nursing interventions across the College and fostering a culture of wellness and self-care. By building trust and rapport with students, the College Nurse supports both their physical and emotional health, offering guidance and care tailored to individual needs. They collaborate closely with parents, staff, and external healthcare providers to ensure students receive the necessary medical attention and support. Reporting to the Deputy Principal, Pastoral and wellbeing ensuring the continued strategic development of the College’s medical provision. This is carried out in alignment with best practice guidelines from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Boarding Schools Association (BSA), and OFSTED. The College has a dedicated Health Centre, where the Nurse will play a key role in its management and daily operations, ensuring the highest standard of care and well-being for students and staff.
Responsibilities
The following list is intended to be indicative and is not exhaustive; the duties and responsibilities of the role may change according to the needs of the College:
Clinical Duties
· Provide medical care to students and staff, including first aid, routine treatments, and emergency care.
· Manage chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, epilepsy) and support dietary needs in collaboration with Catering.
· Assist with arranging medical, dental, and other healthcare appointments for boarding students.
· Oversee inpatient care in the Health Centre, ensuring students receive appropriate support.
· Maintain and stock first aid kits across the College and Boarding Houses.
· Support school trips by providing medical kits, guidance, and training for trip leaders.
· Deliver staff training on key medical topics, including allergy management and emergency procedures.
· Maintain accurate health records, communicate with parents about student illnesses/injuries, and notify them of infectious diseases.
· Prevententaive heal and health education e.g. implement infection control, Ensure safe storage, usage, and disposal of medical supplies.
Pastoral & Safeguarding
· Provide emotional and medical support, referring students to counselling or pastoral staff as needed.
· Work closely with the Safeguarding Team, acting in accordance with Child Protection policies.
· Promote health education and contribute to the Personal Development programme.
Health & Safety Compliance
* Maintain records of accidents and injuries, liaising with the Health & Safety Officer.
* Attend Health & Safety meetings and report concerns to senior management.
* Ensure staff are informed about students’ medical conditions and care plans.
Liaison & External Relationships
* Collaborate with boarding, teaching, and support staff to ensure high-quality student care.
* Maintain relationships with local GP practices, pharmacies, and external healthcare providers.
* Coordinate vaccination programs and health screenings as necessary.
