Medical Device and Technology Support Officer
Band 2
Job overview
The Clinical Engineering Service is looking for an individual to join our team to complement our existing staff groups.
Do you have an interest in engineering technology, looking to learn how medical health science technology promotes better health for all and be part of an advanced engineering support service within NHS Trusts?
You will be based at Torbay Hospital, working alongside various sections within the service. Your main initial role will be to support the front-line service provided by the Medical Devices Library, part of the Medical Electronics Section.
The Medical Devices Library Service is an internal loan service to Torbay Hospital for key items of medical equipment used in all wards & most departments. We expect you to visit health care sites in Devon to collect and return devices and undertake simple and straightforward repairs.
Over the next few years, you have the opportunity to develop technical competencies. This may lead to fully funded engineering training programs at local colleges [L3/L4/HNC] and University [Level 6/Bsc/Beng].
Our Medical Devices Officer will be required to travel to other centres in the South Devon area in the course of their work and will be required to hold a full driver’s licence.
Main duties of the job
* Undertake the delivery and retrieval of all medical devices and equipment supporting the Clinical Engineering Services for Medical Electronics section, Medical Devices Library.
* Perform straightforward repairs, scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, safety, and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical devices under close supervision from a more experienced technician.
* Provide guidance and training to colleagues & junior staff in the procedures to use, clean, and check loan medical devices held in the Medical Devices Library.
Working for our organisation
The Clinical Engineering Service provides a comprehensive management & technical support service for a broad spectrum of medical devices used throughout the health, care, and social community. We are currently developing networks with scientific and laboratory services across Devon with our new Scientific, Laboratory Equipment Support section.
The Medical Devices Library provides a loan service for key medical devices commonly used throughout the acute Trust. This has enabled the organisation to promote & implement a strong standardisation theme for medical devices held as library stock, enabling efficiencies in consumable costs, reduced opportunities for user error, and less diversity requiring technical support, repair & maintenance.
Medical Electronics, being the largest section in CES, provides repair, routine scheduled service maintenance, troubleshooting, technical advice, and commissioning & device disposal (‘cradle to grave’). Medical Electronics implements and manages Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Safety Notices and Manufacturer product recalls/updates. Within this section, there are three teams providing specialist support for: Critical Care areas (Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit & High Dependency) and Operating Theatre Support (all Operating Theatres and Recovery areas).
