Job overview
Applications are welcomed for a highly motivated Consultant Anaesthetist / Intensivist post based at Morecambe Bay Hospitals. Th e hospital is a trust of 5 site bases with intensive care departments on 2 of its larger sites and theatres on 3 of the 5 sites. You will predominantly be based at the Furness General Hospital covering the Intensive Care Unit. You will join a department of 8 Consultants with several Specialists, Specialty Doctors and ACCP’s. Depending upon your clinical skills the successful candidate could have the opportunity to work in main theatres covering maternity, gynecology, orthopedic and trauma, ophthalmology and ENT while also attending our Westmorland General Hospital that focuses primarily on Elective Surgery.
Furness General Hospital is a lovely, friendly district general hospital based in South Cumbria close to the Lake District. Westmorland General Hospital is located on the outskirts of the popular Lakeland town of Kendal. All our hospitals are situated in areas of outstanding natural beauty, which offer superb outdoor and recreational activities close to the Lake District, an ideal base to escape large City Centre pressures. Access to good transport links allows for easy reach to many northern cities where you will find a wealth of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries close by.
Main duties of the job
You will participate in a 1:8 Consultant of the week model, including prospective cover.
You will join a team of 8 Consultants with several Specialists and Specialty Doctors supporting all general services of the hospital including a busy Accident and Emergency department, Theatres covering maternity, Gynaecology, Orthopaedic and trauma, ophthalmology and ENT.
On-call shifts provide non-residential cover of emergency ITU, supervising a dedicated resident anaesthetist .
Lead Assessments of the deteriorating patient for emergency admission to the Intensive Care Unit.
Lead the team in managing pre and post operative theatre admissions.
Participate in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement.
Demonstrate evidence - based practice where appropriate .
Undertake and participate in the appraisal process and job planning.
Satisfy the criteria for revalidation.
Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise .
Actively participate in continuing medical education.
Undertake personal appraisal and job-planning as part of revalidation.
Maintain all mandatory training requirements.

You must hold full GMC with a license to practice
Person specification
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* FICM or an equivalent qualification
* FRCA or an equivalent appropriate higher anaesthetic qualification
* Higher Postgraduate professional qualifications in research or Education
Training and experience
* ICM recognised formal training in intensive care medicine or equivalent
* Experience in the management of Trauma and other surgical emergencies
* Broad exposure to anaesthesia particularly for laproscopic surgery, emergency surgical and obstetric emergencies.
* Evidence of involvement and experience in audit
* Knowledge of and interest in medical education
Personal skills, ability etc
* Ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment
* Experience of working in a multi disciplinary team
* Able to communicate effectively
* Experience of leading a clinical team
* Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines & GMC recognised training in Educational & clinical supervision.
* Attendance at an advanced communication skills course
* Evidence of significant Leadership roles, training or abilities
Research and development
* Evidence of completion of audits.
* Ability to supervise junior doctors to plan and conduct a research and audit project
* Evidence of peer reviewed publications.

Teaching
* Commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training
* Evidence of previous undergraduate teaching experience.
