Health Care Support Worker

Job overview
The post holder will work as a member of the Paediatric Team, under the direction of the Ward Manager/Nurse in Charge. The post holder will adhere at all times to the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales (WG 2011).
The post holder will contribute to the provision of health care to children and young people and families by providing assistance to the Registered Nurse in undertaking a range of duties with direct supervision and will be required to report back on those delegated duties to a Registered Nurse.
The post holder will ensure the provision of the highest standards of care, which reflects the quality standards of the Health Board and Health and Care Standards.
The post holder will be required to carry out a range of assigned tasks under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse involving direct and indirect care for the benefit of the child and family in accordance with agreed protocols.
The post holder will be expected to provide support under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse to children ages 0-15 and those aged 16 and above who have yet to transition to adult care who are undergoing medical / surgical treatment and procedures, using play therapy and distraction techniques.
The post holder may be required to maintain adequate levels of stock and equipment and facilitate the efficient, effective use of resources; reporting when availability falls below an acceptable standard or level to a Registered Nurse.
Main duties of the job
* Complete the induction programme and all required statutory and mandatory training as outlined in the core skills framework for all employees of the Health Board.
* Maintain a high standard of care, adhering at all times to Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board policies, guidelines and procedures and working practices.
* Support parents/carers and families as required, and promote Family Centred Care.
* Provide nursing care to children and young people as delegated by the Nurse in Charge.
* Contribute to the implementation of the plan of care as directed by the Registered Nurse.
* Contribute to the assessment process by undertaking a range of clinical tasks as prescribed in the nursing care plan e.g. Blood Pressure Monitoring, Pulse, Temperature, Oxygen Saturations and Respirations under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
* Reporting any apparent change in the patient’s condition and/or environment to the Registered Nurse/Nurse in Charge.
* Assist, support and promote Breastfeeding with parents alongside the Registered Nurse where requested.
* Collect and transport clinical specimens as requested by the Registered Nurse.
* Ensuring that the needs of the patient are paramount and to be aware of and adhere to Policies and Guidelines in relation to the Safeguarding of Children.
* Participate in the implementation of Health Promotion, which aim towards improving physical, social and emotional well-being of the child and family.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Maintain standards of the ward area such as parents room, milk room, ensuring that cleanliness and order of the ward furniture and storage areas / cupboards and equipment. Undertake urine testing and preparation of specimens for investigation. Assist the Registered Nurse to ensure that patient’s nutritional needs are met through assisting in the preparation of patients prior to meals and drinks, providing help and assistance in feeding/drinking where necessary. Supporting children and young people during their daily living. Assist patients in their mobility requirements, help move and position appropriately to maximise their physical comfort, utilising equipment when trained by the multiprofessional team. Ensuring the safe custody of children’s property in accordance with the UHB Financial control procedure. Be aware of and if appropriate, assist in current ward clinical audits. Support the child and family during cannulation and venepuncture. Responsible for undertaking stock level checks and stock rotation. The post holder will work under the direction of the Registered Nurse but be expected to work using own initiative within departmental standard operating procedures.

Qualifications
* NVQ level 2 or the equivalent level of knowledge, training & experience

* Have experience of caring for children within the field of health or social care
