Senior Systems Engineer (Integration and Applications Services)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Systems Engineers to join the University’s IT Services Integration and Application Services Team, part of Digital Applications within IT Operations.
This is a senior level technical position in a team responsible for the provision of application and integration development, 3rd line operational support and the successful delivery and operational management of platforms for web applications and data integrations.
The services provided by the team are an essential part of the overall capability IT Services offers to provide a secure, managed, integrated environment for the operation of University IT applications.
What will you be doing?
The successful candidates appointed to these roles will work in the Integration and Application Services team within the IT Services Digital Applications group.
As part of the team, you will provide expert software analysis, design and development, focused on implementation and support of middleware integration applications, standardised data exchange models and bespoke web applications.
The team takes responsibility for the overall operation of their portfolio of application platform and data exchange services. This requires monitoring, analysis, technical intervention and reporting, which you will be involved in.
The team owns and manages the lifecycle of their applications and services, from commissioning, implementation, through upgrades, maintenance, continuous improvement activities, to eventual retirement and decommissioning. You will work closely with university stakeholders, suppliers and colleagues and services from other IT Services teams in all aspects of this work.
As a senior engineer you will be expected to take a higher level of responsibility and provide expertise and leadership within the team, working closely with the Team Manager and key stakeholders.
You will maintain a culture of continuous improvement to enhance service delivery within the team and wider IT Services.
Showing initiative and agility in developing and maintaining services, you will be confident working independently as well as part of a team. You will be a champion of the IT Services Charter and Change Management and support the delivery of the Digital Strategy.
You should apply if
The following points resonate with you:
* Extensive experience developing and supporting applications using Java.
* Demonstrable expertise with SQL, and leading relational databases (e.g. Oracle and SQL Server).
* Experience of mainstream web integration protocols (e.g. REST).
* Knowledge of working with container technologies in a cloud environment (e.g. Azure, Kubernetes, Docker)
* Experience of developing and supporting solutions for other IT teams, including integration platforms and the automation of monitoring, alerting and reporting.
* Experience of modern development practices (e.g. source control, automated acceptance tests, Continuous Integration).
* Understanding and experience of ITIL concepts particularly Incident, Service Request and Change Management.
* Knowledge of modern system administration approaches, such as automation, configuration management, version control, monitoring and alerting.
* Highly motivated and enthusiastic about working in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
* Can engage with external suppliers and vendors.
* Can communicate with others of varying technical levels.
