This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Clinical / Counselling Psychologist to join our innovative Cancer Psychological Support (CaPS) Team, based at St George's Hospital (SGH). This post offers excellent experience and the opportunity to be part of both a well-established, comprehensive psycho-oncology service and wider specialist cancer centre within a large teaching hospital.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for a senior clinical/counselling psychologist with experience of working clinically in the field of cancer and/or physical health settings within the NHS for at least 12 to 18 months post-qualification. The role will involve direct clinical work individually, with carers, couples/families and group work (including workshops and facilitated structured group courses). We are looking for someone with training and experience in clinical supervision of psychology staff. The post holder will also be involved in indirect advice and consultation to a range of non-psychology health care professionals within and outside SGH, including teaching, training and supervision. A commitment to team working and being able to work creatively are essential.
Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide specialist clinical/counselling psychology (group and individual) for patients diagnosed with cancer and their relatives under the care of SGH. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, alongside a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, five additional Clinical Psychologists, a Systemic Family Therapist and a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist and Assistant Psychologists. The range of work is diverse, covering outpatient and inpatient settings, joint-working with multidisciplinary colleagues (including medical, nursing, allied health care professionals and liaison psychiatry colleagues), alongside many teaching / training, service development and supervisory opportunities.
The post holder will also be a member of the extensive neuropsychology and clinical health psychology department within SGH that would provide support and mentoring for the post holder. The Department is committed to clinical supervision, continuing professional development, teaching, training and career progression. The Department has excellent links with St Georges Hospital Medical School and the University of Surrey and actively supports research.
Person Specification
Qualifications & training
* Post-doctoral in clinical or counselling psychology & HCPC registration
* Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training, health psychology and/or other fields of applied psychology
Experience
* Minimum 18 months post-qualification experience of working in a clinical setting, with at least 12 months of which spent in a clinical health psychology specialty
* Work in cancer and/or physical health, lifespan work, teaching/training/supervision
Skills
* Complex psychological assessment and intervention, consultation to non-psychology professionals
* Ability to engage people in psychological work who are experiencing complex biopsychosocial problems & formal supervision training
Knowledge
* Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology, understanding needs of people with cancer
* High level knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies
Other
* Supporting staff and carers, time/task management
* Experience of working within a multicultural framework, IT & presentation skills, service development/audit/research
