Job overview
Opportunities have arisen for both full and part-time Specimen Processing Administrators to work mainly evenings, but night and weekend work is also available in the Blood Sciences Specimen Reception.
Activities include booking patient demographics & test information to pathology IT systems, sorting specimens, handling urgent specimens, filing and scanning paperwork, distribution of specimens to laboratories, and handling enquiries to the department.
Main duties of the job
1. Performs a range of routine Specimen Reception duties under supervision, e.g. sample sorting, booking and distribution.
2. Data entry activities – booking of patients & tests into pathology IT system.
3. Maintains clinical records in relation to activities carried out.
4. Works flexibly in reflection of service needs, participating in delivery of a 24-hour, 7 days per week service including some extended working days, weekend working, and night shifts.
5. Handles human body fluids, tissues, and hazardous chemicals including blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.
NB: Post holder must not work outside their defined field of competence.

Qualifications
* GCSE Maths and English (A-C) or equivalent
* GCSE in Science (A-C) or equivalent
Experience
* Planning and organising straightforward tasks

* Understanding of role and activities associated with the post

* Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
* Experience of customer service
* Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
