About the Role
EdStart is seeking an experienced and compassionate Teacher of Humanities to join our team, working with KS3 and KS4 students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges. As a Humanities Teacher, you will play a key role in delivering a curriculum that engages and supports students who may face significant barriers to learning. This is a unique opportunity to use the Humanities curriculum to build academic, social, and emotional skills while creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
Key responsibilities:
* To maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the teaching of your subject(s) and take account of wider curriculum and pastoral developments which are relevant to your work.
* To plan tutorials, activities, lessons and sequences of lessons to meet students’ individual learning needs.
* To use a range of appropriate strategies and follow schools policies for tutoring, teaching, behaviour management and classroom management
* To do all you can, involving parents and other agencies, to ensure that as a result of your tutoring and teaching you promote the health, safety, economic wellbeing and achievement of your students.
* To assess, monitor and record the progress of students in your teaching and tutorial groups and give them clear and constructive feedback.
* To set well-grounded expectations for students in your teaching and tutorial groups using information about prior knowledge and previous attainment, making progress as good as or better than similar students nationally.
* To take responsibility for your own professional development and use the outcomes to improve your tutoring and teaching and your students’ learning.
* To make an active contribution to the policies, aspirations and plans of learners, working as part of the EdStart teaching staff
Required Skills & Experience
* A degree in Humanities (e.g., History, Geography, or Religious Studies) or a related subject, with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) or equivalent.
* 2 years of secondary teaching experience preferred, with a proven ability to work with KS3 and KS4 students
* A strong understanding of how to differentiate lessons for students with a wide range of academic and emotional needs.
* Passion for Humanities and using the subject to support the academic and personal development of students with complex needs.
* Experience using positive behaviour management strategies to support students with social, emotional, and behavioural challenges.
* Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to engage with students, colleagues, and parents effectively.
* A patient, empathetic, and flexible approach to teaching and supporting students.

* Inclusive Teaching: Create an inclusive, welcoming environment where all students feel valued, confident, and motivated to engage in their Humanities learning.
* Differentiation: Use a variety of teaching strategies and resources to ensure all students, including those with SEN and SEMH, can engage with and succeed in the Humanities curriculum.
* Engagement and Motivation: Foster a love for learning and ensure students are actively engaged in their lessons, even if they have faced significant academic and emotional challenges.
* Assessments and Feedback: Use regular, effective assessments to monitor students’ progress and provide them with actionable feedback that helps them reach their learning goals.
* Behavioral Support: Manage classroom behaviour effectively using positive strategies that support students in overcoming challenges and participating fully in lessons.
* Collaborative Approach: Work closely with colleagues to share best practices, ensuring a consistent approach to supporting students across all subjects and phases.
* Communication: Build positive relationships with students, parents, and other stakeholders, ensuring open and consistent communication regarding students’ progress and needs.
