University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Department of ENT Surgery Head and Neck Fellow (ST8 level)
Applications are invited for a Head and Neck Fellow at ST8 Level in ENT Surgery based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The successful candidate will work closely with our experienced consultants enhancing their surgical skills to a level that will enable independent practice as a consultant in this area of ENT surgery. The appointment is 12 months.
This post is designed as a post CCT position, but those nearing completion of their specialist training programme or equivalent will be considered. Please note however that this period may not be accredited for training by the Royal College of Surgeons.
The appointment will be at the grade of ST8 for both daily clinical work and for on-call work. The Department serves the entire Leicestershire area with a number of sub-speciality interests being represented. There are also close links with the Leicester University Medical School.
Main duties of the job
The Fellow will be a senior non-consultant member of the ENT department, and will receive comprehensive training in Head and Neck. The success of the Fellowship is dependent upon integration into the existing firms of the consultants such that teaching, training and clinical experience is maximised for all concerned.
The general duties such as organisation and running of clinics and operating lists in the consultants' absence are commensurate with the position of a senior member of the firm. The Fellow will be responsible for covering the clinical and theatre sessions in the absence of the consultants.
The fellow is expected to work with members of the Consultant staff to design, carry out and write up research projects and audit.
Job responsibilities
The fellowship will be in all aspects of Head and Neck surgery and the post will be based at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
You will take part in a 1 in 7 hot week on-call rota, supervising emergency cases, and ward patients during the working day, and be expected to help with the training and supervision of new junior doctors (F2 ST2), as well as take part in Department meetings, research and audit.
The ENT Department takes an active role in the education of undergraduate medical students at Leicester Medical School and is also concerned with the teaching of speech therapy students, nurses and Operating Department Practitioners.
In addition, there are opportunities to be involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate simulation.
