We have an exciting opportunity for a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to work in our Forensic Outreach Service (FOS). The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and treatment of 40-50 community patients living in South-West London. The postholder will also provide clinical leadership to the Criminal Justice Liaison & Diversion Service (courts and police custody) and provide a Forensic Consultancy service to the London Borough of Wandsworth.
There is a well-established multidisciplinary team across the Trust, working collaboratively with other mental health services and the health visiting teams. There are existing networks within South West London, and there are several teaching and training opportunities within the organisation, as well as at St George’s Medical School.
This Consultant vacancy has arisen due to the resignation of a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in the Forensic Service and is short term to cover the recruitment process for a substantive Consultant.
This post is open to both experienced Consultants and suitably experienced Higher Trainees. This role is an excellent opportunity for acting up as a Consultant at the end of the higher specialist training (subject to Deanery approval) for Trainees who want to consider a career in Forensic Psychiatry as the Higher Trainees will be supervised and will be supported.
The post holder will be working alongside another senior Consultant within the Forensic Outreach Service. The team is driven by delivering excellent clinical care, with several ongoing quality improvement projects and many service development opportunities, within our Trust, but also across the South London Outreach Services. The post holder will be supported to pursue research as an SPA activity.
The Trust has a comprehensive training scheme for Core and Higher Specialist Trainees and enjoys a close relationship with St George’s, University of London, an independent School of the University of London.
South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust is a well-established organisation since 1994, providing mental health services to a local population of over 1 million people across the Boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth. In general, the population of SW London is more affluent than other sectors of London and many people in the boroughs served by the Trust are highly educated and assertive in demanding the services they want. There are also pockets of deprivation, and service provision is therefore carefully attuned to the requirements of the population as a whole. The Trust’s vision is “A future in which people with mental health problems have the same opportunity as other citizens to participate in and contribute to our communities.” The Trust values are Respectful, Open, Compassionate, Collaborative and Consistent. We are an inclusive organisation, looking for people who live these qualities when delivering care and supporting service users and families.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical leadership of and full participation in the multi-disciplinary teams providing forensic mental health services to patients in the community and the Criminal Justice System.
2. The furthering of research, both in terms of personal projects and supervision of junior doctors as required.
