Responsible AI UK (RAi UK) is a UKRI-funded flagship research and innovation programme dedicated to promoting the responsible development, use and governance of artificial intelligence. RAi UK is led from the University of Southampton with partners at the Universities of Nottingham, Glasgow, Swansea, as well as UCL, King’s College London, Queen Mary London and Queen’s University Belfast. Since its inception in 2023, the programme has been on an accelerated growth trajectory. It has funded over 23 research, skills and innovation projects involving universities and industry partners from across the UK; organised several high-profile ecosystem building activities and undertaken research projects to address emerging challenges in Responsible AI.
We are seeking a highly qualified Chief of Staff to join the RAi team who will work closely with the CEO’s office to drive forward our existing commitments and achievements. The Chief of Staff will also support the identification and delivery of the programme's key priorities, while engaging with the core pillars of the programme (Research, Skills, Public Engagement and Policy, Ecosystem Coordination and Equities). The postholder will provide leadership and direction to the dedicated teams underpinning each of these pillars, to support cross-functional coordination and implementation, ensuring effective partnership engagement with external stakeholders.
Reporting directly to the RAi UK CEO, you will be a key part of the executive team whilst also representing the team externally to embed our reputation and visibility. You will be able to demonstrate via your CV and covering letter a proven ability to lead and manage new innovative solutions and value-added ways of working, demonstrating your skills both analytically and creatively. Alongside excellent communication and influencing skills, you will have experience of strategic planning to enable you to direct and manage complex activities across functions and with varying stakeholders against the backdrop of challenging timescales.
This role is based at the University of Southampton, a Russell Group university renowned for its excellence in research and innovation. This includes access to world-class facilities and resources within the university's AI ecosystem with opportunities to collaborate with leading academics and researchers in AI and other disciplines.
While flexible working arrangements may be considered, with a mix of on-campus presence and remote working, there is an expectation of regular national and international travel, representing RAi UK and standing in for the CEO at key national and international events. We do support additional benefits that will make your life easier, such as a corporate healthcare scheme and generous holiday allowance. We will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts.
