Job Purpose:
Provide learning mentor support to students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, emotional and behavioral needs who are on mainstream or discrete courses. Assist in the implementation of detailed assessments and monitoring and review of support strategies. Carry out instructions from the Learning Support Coordinator, and liaise on a day-to-day basis with teaching staff responsible for the courses involved. Participate in the continuous professional development and training that will enhance personal growth and the work of the division.
Accountabilities:
1. Escort and assist students, including those with mobility difficulties, to get into and around, and to meet a range of personal care needs (e.g., toileting, feeding) in accordance with individual support plans.
2. Accompany students on curriculum-related visits (e.g., work experience, residential).
3. Act as an advocate and encourage self-advocacy.
4. Actively encourage students to be independent.
5. Relay student concerns and issues to teaching staff and departmental managers.
6. Support, scribe, and read for students; support transition into and progression at the program's end.
7. Assist with detailed individual assessment of student needs in line with the College or departmental procedures.
8. Devise and implement support strategies with senior departmental staff and other College professionals around individual students or groups to overcome their barriers to learning.
9. Help with the follow-up of student attendance problems and assist teaching staff and departmental managers in identifying reasons for poor attendance and student retention.
10. Liaise with the Learning Mentor Coordinator or authorized deputy on a regular basis.
11. Attend learning mentor team meetings and key worker meetings regularly.
12. Liaise with other professionals in the care of individual students.
General:
Understand and adhere to college Health and Safety policies and guidelines, ensuring compliance with statutory legislation. Undertake other duties as may be reasonably required. Potential travel to other locations to attend meetings and meet with teams when required. Take appropriate responsibility for PREVENT and the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children and/or vulnerable adults.
Essential:
Must have a driving licence and own transport.
