Job summary
A vacancy has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (AfC Band 6) to become part of the team in Haematology and Blood Transfusion University Hospitals Sussex Foundation NHS Trust based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.
Main duties of the job
Our busy Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments are staffed by a well-established, friendly and hard working team working closely with other healthcare professionals to provide a quality service to our users. The laboratory has full training status with the HCPC and IBMS. We currently work a 24/7 shift system with a local agreement in place.
The department offers support and encouragement of your CPD and the opportunity to attend approved external courses when available. The laboratory is modern and well equipped including Sysmex Haematology analysers, Stago coagulation analysers, and Ortho Blood Grouping analysers in Transfusion. We also perform HPLC for Haemoglobinopathies and have an Immunohaematology Requirements ( also as per Job description/ Job Spec)Current HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist Will have suitable post registration experience within a UK Pathology service Haematology / Blood Transfusion laboratory and /or an MSc and/or an IBMS specialist portfolio.
A band 5 HCPC registered BMS will be considered at interview, with expectation to work at a band 5 level gaining Specialist Portfolio to then move into Band 6 Post.

Job responsibilities
The department provides a service covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There will be a requirement to work out of hours/night/weekend shifts. Local agreements are in place for payment to cover working patterns outside of the Agenda for Change hours. The post holder may participate in overtime and out of routine hours working arrangements, and as an autonomous practitioner in the emergency call service, after satisfying competency assessment.
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist the post holder will undertake an extensive range of complex investigations to assist in the diagnosis of disease, and monitoring of treatment. This will involve rotation through Haematology, Coagulation, Blood Transfusion and Immunohaematology. These investigations include manual, semi-automated and automated techniques on highly specialised analytical equipment.

1. BSc Biomedical Sciences or Degree accredited by IBMS as suitable for HCPC registration

4. Already undertaking Band 6 Role
5. substantive post registration experience / competency in required activities referably in UK
6. Experience of use of relevant instrumentation within the laboratory

8. Able to work to appropriate standard of competency in all sections, and through rotation, maintain those skills
9. Sufficient Skill and knowledge to deputise for Band 7 staff in their absence to maintain workflow and manage staffing
10. Able to assist with training and management of Practitioner BMS staff
11. IT skills appropriate to the department
