An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptist to join our dynamic Orthoptic team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust for a period of up to 9 months to cover maternity leave within the department.
The post will provide Orthoptic clinical cover at all Trust Hospitals with a base at Queen's Hospital Burton, but also covering all community sites across the UHDB area.
We provide a full range of sub-speciality clinics including ocular motility, paediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology, visual processing disorders, stroke, paediatric special educational needs, paediatric low vision, secondary vision screening and oculoplastics. The successful candidate will be working alongside a multidisciplinary team which includes Ophthalmologists, Nurses, Optometrists, Technicians, administrative staff, and health care assistants.
The successful candidate will have clinical experience, be able to practice independently but will be provided with clinical and professional support and advice within the Orthoptic department.
To be responsible for the Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis, and appropriate management of all new and follow up paediatric and adult patients referred for an Orthoptic opinion.
Responsible for the appropriate selection of patients for squint surgery. To undertake pre-operative and post-operative measurements of the eye movement disorder and to discuss surgical options with the Ophthalmologist. To identify post-operative risks (e.g. possibility of double vision) and to discuss this with the patient and/or their parent/carers.
Instillation of appropriate eye drops in patients across the age range as agreed by the Ophthalmologist in accordance with the local PGD or utilising Medical Exemptions.
Provide precise instruction and appropriate Trust approved leaflets for patient, parents or carers on a continuous course of home treatment.
To follow departmental and Trust guidance in the management of children who are not brought to their planned appointments.
Discuss findings with colleagues where changes to treatment may be required and undertake training as required to develop and promote the area of clinical expertise.
