Job overview
This is a challenging and highly attractive role for any advanced nurse practitioner who aims to act as a highly experienced, knowledgeable and educated member of the team who is able to work autonomously making decisions to treat health needs of surgical patients with colorectal disease including cancer. There will be the opportunity to develop skills if not already available (e.g. surgical skills in theatre, prescribing). The job is also focused on providing and ensuring the delivery of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) principles for patients with primary colorectal cancer. The role encompasses the whole patient journey in the hospital, from preadmission to post-discharge. The post holder will be expected to dedicate 50% of their time delivering enhanced recovery to patients after colorectal surgery.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced colorectal/lower GI senior nurse or nurse practitioner to join our very dynamic team of practitioners and surgeons.
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and knowledgeable nurse practitioner to join our team within St Marks as a band 8a. Applicants must have physical assessment and prescribing courses, looking to work in a supportive environment with world leading surgeons and clinicians to assist in the smooth running of both emergency and elective admissions. (Please read attached JD for specifications). Working in the 14th highest rated gastroenterology hospital in the world, we will work with you to enable you to gain the most from your clinical skills as an autonomous practitioner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Provide assistance to the pre-assessment team (for ERAS patients).
* Liaison with surgical staff, as well as theatre, ward and clerical staff, on relevant issues including theatre lists to support coherent service provision.
* Participation in the WHO safe surgery checklist.
* Preparation of patients for surgery including venepuncture, male and female catheterisation, patient positioning and preparation.
* Undertaking of surgical procedures as part of the MDT for colorectal surgery under the supervision and direction of the operating surgeon.
* Acting as first or second assistant as directed by the supervising surgeon.
* Facilitation of continuity of care.
* Postoperative care, including wound assessment, initial treatment and identification of surgical problems and complications.
* Facilitation of the training by supporting a training session or providing delegated care to a patient while the supervising surgeon is conducting a training session.
* Have or willing to complete MSc as a surgical care practitioner accredited by RCS.

* First Degree or equivalent experience.
* MSC as a surgical care practitioner accredited by RCS or working towards.
Knowledge & Experience
* Extensive post registration experience in acute/chronic medical/surgical gastrointestinal nursing.
* Demonstrate publications/research activity.
* Advanced assessment course or equivalent experience.
* Prescribing course or working towards.
